Nach einer genauen Untersuchung fanden Wren and Cuff heraus, dass beide Versionen in Klang, Bauteilen und Werten sehr ähnlich sind. Aber die Höhen sind in den Tall Fonts präsenter und klarer, was zu einem offeneren Sound führt, der für dieses Pedal einzigartig ist. Die Tall Fonts klingen nicht so dunkel, was ihnen eine rauere, direktere Note verleiht, die bei den 'Civil War' Muffs nicht zu finden ist. Die getesteten Vintage Pedale hatten alle einige Unstimmigkeiten und Abweichungen in den verwendeten Bauteilen und sogar den Potis, also entschied man sich bei Wren and Cuff für ein besonders gut klingendes Pedal als Vorlage und passte die Bauteile und Werte so genau wie möglich an. Dabei wurden auch altersbedingte Veränderungen und 'falsche' Bauteile berücksichtigt, deren tatsächliche Werte deutlich von den Vorgaben und Schaltplänen der Originale abwichen. Das Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian verfügt über speziell modifizierte Potis, die dafür sorgen, dass die unteren Mitten nicht zu 'schmutzig' werden und gleichzeitig eine wichtige Rolle für Overdrive-Qualität des Pedals spielen. Der 'knurrige' Sound macht sich besonders gut am Bass und funktioniert fantastisch für satte, aggressive Gitarren-Sounds mit einem 'bösen' Growl. Der Bass-Anteil im Signal hat eine Overdrive-ähnliche Kompression und die Höhen bieten ein volles Spektrum an harmonischen Obertönen, welches die Begeisterung für das Pedal mehr als verständlich macht. Im Bereich der Mitten gibt es den charakteristischen Muff Mid-Scoop, der jedoch nicht so stark ausgeprägt ist wie bei einigen anderen Muff-Varianten.

Wren and Cuff worked hard to gain their reputation as 'Muff masters' by literally hand-wiring hundreds of Muffs and Muff-related pedals and they pride themselves on truly digging into the vintage units they recreate and go to great lengths to duplicate all aspects of the original circuits to the best of their ability. After all the Muff type pedals built under their brand, the Tall Font Russian was the toughest pedal to nail. While most guitar players consider the old Russian 'Civil War' fuzz pedals to be the absolute best, there is also a group that prefers the first green Tall Font Muff pedals (with the screws on the side) built in Russia. After a precise investigation, Wren and Cuff found that both versions are very similar in tone, parts, and values. Very close. But the highs are more present and clearer in the Tall Fonts resulting in an openness in the highs unique to this pedal. They're generally not as dark sounding, which gives them a slight gritty edge and a rudeness, which is not found in the 'Civil War' Muffs. The tested vintage units all had some inconsistencies in the used parts and even the pots, so Wren and Cuff went with one particularly sweet sounding pedal and matched the gains as closely as possible by using a mix of transistors and an important biasing resistor and a capacitor that were a much different value than stated on the components and schematic. Each Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian features specially modified pots that are responsible for keeping the low-mid range from getting to mucky and which are also a factor in the more over-drive type quality these Russians can produce. This boxy-growl also helps make them particularly great on bass, and fantastic for growling, raunchy, less friendly guitar tones with a nasty snarl. The lows have an overdriven compression that keeps things tight, and the highs have a rich upper-harmonic thing going on that'll make one understand the affection some have for this pedal. The mids have the standard Muff-scoop but it is not as pronounced as some of the other generations. Add to that a less gainy / fuzzy tone overall and you end up with a unique Muff with a character all its own.

Finally, after many, many requests, Wren and Cuff released the Box of War in a compact Small Foot edition. It is the same pedal as the full-size Box of War, originally housed in a large folded steel enclosure, modified to be able to fit in a standard effects pedal housing. That's it! Same parts, same guts, smaller size. The Box of War is a true recreation of the famous 'Civil War' fuzz pedals from the '90s and Wren and Cuff prides themselves on truly digging into the vintage units they recreate and go to great lengths to duplicate all aspects of the original circuits to the best of their ability, and they have spared nothing in researching this rare, much-loved, but cheaply made famous fuzzer. The pedal creates a bit darker and a bit fuzzier tone than the famous Tall Font fuzz pedals and compared to other Muffs, the Box of War has less output and is also less fuzzy, but it captures the unique woody sustain and presence of the original 'Civil War' pedal perfectly. There is a good reason why the original version became a secret weapon for many musicians around the world and the Wren and Cuff Box of War captures that sound, feeling and tone perfectly.

Wenn Gitarristen, die sich mit ihrem Equipment auskennen, über Fuzz Pedale im Muff-Stil zu fachsimpeln, ist das meist ein relativ unkompliziertes Gespräch. Abgesehen von den unzähligen Varianten geht es in der Diskussion meist um Transistoren und wer welche Variante verwendet hat. Dabei gab es eine merkwürdige Zeit in der Geschichte der Muff Pedale, in der sich das Design der Schaltung drastisch änderte. Das war 1978, als die Transistoren im Inneren zugunsten von Operationsverstärkern, auch als Op-Amps bekannt, ausrangiert wurden. Diese spezielle Variante wurde nur etwa zwei Jahre lang hergestellt und so haben es nur wenige tausend Stück jemals aus New York City geschafft. Im Jahr 2014 haben die 'Muff-Meister' von Wren and Cuff mit dem Eye See '78 (früher als Eye See Pi bekannt) die endgültige Version der nicht-transistorisierten Fuzz Box entwickelt. Abgesehen von den fehlenden Transistoren bietet das Wren and Cuff Eye See '78 eine komplett andere Clipping-Sektion für einen monströs 'wolligen' Sound, wie er von Billy Corgan von den Smashing Pumpkins auf Siamese Dream populär gemacht wurde. Der Sound des Eye See '78 unterscheidet sich erwartungsgemäß von einer klassischen Muff-Schaltung: Während die meisten Vintage-Muffs etwas 'süßer' klingen, ist das Eye See '78 deutlich crunchiger und 'fetter' als ein Standard-Muff. 1978 wurde die Schaltung außerdem um einen Tone Bypass Schalter auf der Rückseite des Pedals erweitert, der natürlich auch für das Eye See '78 übernommen wurde. Wer nach einem ungezähmten, IC-basierten Fuzz und Distortion Pedal sucht, das sich an jedes denkbare Genre anpassen lässt, ist beim Wren and Cuff Eye See '78 genau richtig!

Talking shop about Muff-style fuzz pedals with any guitar player that knows his or her stuff is a relatively straightforward conversation. Aside from the myriad of variants, the talk usually evolves into transistors and who used which variant. There was a curious time in Muff history, when the circuit designed changed drastically. That time was 1978, when the transistors inside were scrapped in favor of operational amplifiers, otherwise known as op-amps, which are integrated circuits, or ICs. This particular variant was only manufactured for around two years, and as such, only a few thousand ever made it out of New York City alive. Fast forward to 2014, and the Muff masters at Wren and Cuff have crafted the definitive version of the non-transistorized fuzz box. They call it the Eye See '78 (or previously Eye See Pi). Apart from the lack of transistors, the Wren and Cuff Eye See '78 features a drastically different clipping section for a monstrously woolly sound, such as the one popularized by Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins on Siamese Dream. As expected, the sound of the Eye See '78 is different from a standard Muff circuit. While most vintage muffs are a little 'sweeter' sounding, the Eye See '78 is certainly crunchier and more 'ballsy' than a standard Muff. In 1978, a switch was added to the back of the original, and the Eye See '78 includes this switch as well. The control is labeled as Tone Bypass on both old and new pedals. Essentially, it removes the passive tone stack from the circuit for a volume boost and a significantly more raw and open sound. Of course, this switch renders the tone control useless, but in this mode, you won't miss it - this switch is just too cool. If you're looking for a largely-untamed IC-based fuzz and distortion machine, with the ability to adapt to most genres of music under the sun, look no further than the Wren and Cuff Eye See '78.

Das Phat Phuk B ist ein JFET / Germanium Single Circuit Hybrid Booster - ein einzigartig klingendes Pedal, das den Höhen einen schönen Glanz und dem Tone ein wenig Grit verleiht. Es eignet sich besonders in Situationen, in denen man das Output Level anheben möchte und gleichzeitig nach dem 'gewissen Extra' sucht, um den Part besser zu betonen. Natürlich ist es auch ein perfektes Always-On Pedal am Anfang der Signalkette, dass dem Klang des Instruments einen speziellen Charakter mit etwas Grit verleihen kann. Durch den modernen JFET-Transistor in der Input Stage harmoniert das Phat Phuk B problemlos mit aktiven und passiven Elektroniken und Pickups. Während viele Clean Boost Pedale fast zu viel Output Boost bieten, was es aufgrund des weiten Regelbereichs schwierig macht, die perfekte Einstellung zu finden, kommt das Phat Phuk B mit einem bewusst reduzierten Volume-Sweep. Das Pedal bietet trotzdem ausreichend Volume und Gain, durch den verringerten Regelbereich ist es aber deutlich einfacher den Sweet Spot für das eigene Equipment zu finden. Das Wren and Cuff Phat Phuk B muss man einfach probiert haben - die Schönheit liegt in der Einfachheit und die meisten Musiker werden überrascht sein, wie oft er läuft!

The Wren and Cuff Phat Phuk B is a dirty booster effects pedal specifically made for the bass guitar. It is not a clone of any other pedal and was designed to accommodate tunings down to a typical low B and can be used for even lower tunings. The Phat Phuk B is a JFET / germanium single circuit hybrid booster - a unique sounding pedal which adds a beautiful sheen to the top-end and a bit of grit to the overall tone. It's a fantastic pedal for situations where you want a lift in your overall level, during a chorus or bridge for example, with a bit of bawdy bump via the germanium transistor. One nice feature is also the more modern JFET transistor at the input which keeps the pedal impedance-friendly when it comes to active bass pickups. While many clean boost pedals offer almost too much output boost, which makes it difficult to dial in the perfect amount due to the wide control range, the Phat Phuk B comes with a reduced Volume sweep. It is still capable to create a big amount of gain, but the trade-off is worth the extra control, which makes it easier to find the sweet spot for your equipment. Give the Phat Phuk B a try - its beauty is in its simplicity and most musicians will be surprised how often it’s on!

Germanium transistor lovers, rejoice! Wren and Cuff has done everything possible to make an amazing vintage pedal even better. Dripping with fuzz, super dynamic, trim-pot adjustable bias, and more. Many musicians love the classic round fuzz pedals for their sound, but most of them don't like the traditional low output. Wren and Cuff fixed that and the Your Face 60's Germanium Fuzz offers the unique vintage sound and in addition, all the volume you could ever want or need. Another problem with the vintage units is the way that the Fuzz knob is only useful at the last end of the knob, so Wren and Cuff added a reverse-log potentiometer that widens that range and let's you dial things in just right. They also used Mullard 'tropical fish' out-cap with increased value to allow more lows to come through. The adjustable Low-Cut control can be used to reduce some of the low-end squash, this is a simple but fantastic mod that gives an incredible amount of versatility.
