The "Sonder" is a very special chorus/tremolo pedal. It starts with independent fully analog channels for chorus and tremolo. These channels layer together with endless combinations of chorus with tremolo.

Fast chorus, slow tremolo, slow chorus, fast tremolo, medium... well... you get it, the interactive possibilities are endless.

The Sonder features an intelligent set of controls that activate a buffered bypass for either chorus or tremolo when the "Depth/Mix" controls are set to 0% (thereby removing them entirely from the signal chain).

The Sonder also has a true bypass when the bypass footswitch is pressed and a tap tempo function for the tremolo channel. When activated with taps, the Sonder ignores the "Rate" knob and matches the tempo of the input taps. As soon as the "Rate" control is adjusted, the Sonder returns to manual control.

The special has another trick up its sleeve. You can switch between a smooth "sine" wave tremolo or the more choppy "square" wave setting. But where is the switch? Just keep your foot on the Tempo footswitch. The blinking LED will change from BLUE (smooth sine wave, warm, Fender amp style pulsing) to RED (a choppy, harder, more affected square wave tone) to indicate you are now in this mode.

To increase the effect a bit, a slight boost circuit has been added to keep your Sonder loud and punchy.

Die Muff Seite ist ein Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian Fuzz (eine detailgetreue Nachbildung der ersten grünen Tall Font Muff Pedale, die in Russland gebaut wurden) mit ein paar kleinen Anpassungen und Erweiterungen. Das Fuzz bietet ein tightes Low-End mit Overdrive-ähnlicher Kompression und eine präsente, klare Treble-Range, vermischt mit einem legendären Tone und einer etwas raueren, direkteren Note, die bei den 'Civil War' Muffs nicht zu finden ist. Im Vergleich zum Standard Tall Font Russian hat die Muff Seite des Super Russian etwas mehr Output Volume und einen zusätzlichen Kippschalter, der zwischen dem charakteristischen Muff Mid-Scoop und einem Flat-EQ Setting in den Mitten wählt. Die Fuzz-Sektion verfügt außerdem über den schaltbaren 'Creamy Dreamer' Mod, der zusätzlich mehr Gain und einen Output Boost aktiviert. Die Buffer-Boost Seite ist eine separate kristallklare, transparente Germanium Buffered-Boost-Sektion, die vor die Muff-Sektion geschaltet ist, um den Sound noch stärker in die Sättigung zu bringen. Der Buffered-Boost lässt sich auch ohne das Fuzz nutzen, um den Clean Sound 'fetter' zu machen oder um das Front-End des Verstärkers oder anderer Effektpedale zu pushen.

The Wren and Cuff Super Russian combines a Muff section and a transparent germanium buffered boost section in an extremely versatile effects pedal. The Muff side is basically a Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian fuzz (a precise recreation of the first green Tall Font Muff pedals built in Russia) with some little tweaks and adjustments. The fuzz provides a tight low-end with overdriven compression and a present and clear treble range, mixed with a legendary tone and a slight gritty edge and a rudeness, which is not found in the 'Civil War' Muffs. Compared to the standard Tall Font Russian fuzz, the Muff side of the Super Russian has a bit more output volume and comes with a toggle switch for the EQ setting that selects between the characteristic Muff mid-scoop and a flat EQ setting in the mids. The fuzz section also features the fabled 'Creamy Dreamer' mod to send things into a rich hyper-drive on command. The buffer-boost side is a separate crystal-clear transparent germanium buffered boost, placed before the Muff section to push things even harder if needed. This buffered boost can also be used on its own as a beautiful tool to beef up the clean tone or to use it to push another pedal later down the chain.

Wren and Cuff haben hart gearbeitet, um ihren Ruf als 'Muff-Meister' zu erlangen, indem sie Hunderte von Muffs und Muff-ähnlichen Pedalen buchstäblich von Hand verdrahtet haben. Sie sind stolz darauf, die Vintage Pedale, die sie nachbauen, bis ins kleinste Detail zu analysieren, um alle Aspekte der Original-Schaltung nach besten Kräften absolut exakt zu duplizieren. Nach all den Pedalen, die Wren and Cuff im Laufe der Jahre gebaut haben, war das Tall Font Russian das am schwersten zu duplizierende Pedal. Während die meisten Gitarristen die alten russischen 'Civil War' Fuzz Pedale für die absolut Besten halten, gibt es auch eine Gruppe, die die ersten grünen Tall Font Muff Pedale (mit den Schrauben an der Seite) aus russischer Produktion bevorzugt. Nach einer genauen Untersuchung fanden Wren and Cuff heraus, dass beide Versionen in Klang, Bauteilen und Werten sehr ähnlich sind. Aber die Höhen sind in den Tall Fonts präsenter und klarer, was zu einem offeneren Sound führt, der für dieses Pedal einzigartig ist. Die Tall Fonts klingen nicht so dunkel, was ihnen eine rauere, direktere Note verleiht, die bei den 'Civil War' Muffs nicht zu finden ist. Die getesteten Vintage Pedale hatten alle einige Unstimmigkeiten und Abweichungen in den verwendeten Bauteilen und sogar den Potis, also entschied man sich bei Wren and Cuff für ein besonders gut klingendes Pedal als Vorlage und passte die Bauteile und Werte so genau wie möglich an. Dabei wurden auch altersbedingte Veränderungen und 'falsche' Bauteile berücksichtigt, deren tatsächliche Werte deutlich von den Vorgaben und Schaltplänen der Originale abwichen. Das Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian verfügt über speziell modifizierte Potis, die dafür sorgen, dass die unteren Mitten nicht zu 'schmutzig' werden und gleichzeitig eine wichtige Rolle für Overdrive-Qualität des Pedals spielen. Der 'knurrige' Sound macht sich besonders gut am Bass und funktioniert fantastisch für satte, aggressive Gitarren-Sounds mit einem 'bösen' Growl. Der Bass-Anteil im Signal hat eine Overdrive-ähnliche Kompression und die Höhen bieten ein volles Spektrum an harmonischen Obertönen, welches die Begeisterung für das Pedal mehr als verständlich macht. Im Bereich der Mitten gibt es den charakteristischen Muff Mid-Scoop, der jedoch nicht so stark ausgeprägt ist wie bei einigen anderen Muff-Varianten.

Wren and Cuff worked hard to gain their reputation as 'Muff masters' by literally hand-wiring hundreds of Muffs and Muff-related pedals and they pride themselves on truly digging into the vintage units they recreate and go to great lengths to duplicate all aspects of the original circuits to the best of their ability. After all the Muff type pedals built under their brand, the Tall Font Russian was the toughest pedal to nail. While most guitar players consider the old Russian 'Civil War' fuzz pedals to be the absolute best, there is also a group that prefers the first green Tall Font Muff pedals (with the screws on the side) built in Russia. After a precise investigation, Wren and Cuff found that both versions are very similar in tone, parts, and values. Very close. But the highs are more present and clearer in the Tall Fonts resulting in an openness in the highs unique to this pedal. They're generally not as dark sounding, which gives them a slight gritty edge and a rudeness, which is not found in the 'Civil War' Muffs. The tested vintage units all had some inconsistencies in the used parts and even the pots, so Wren and Cuff went with one particularly sweet sounding pedal and matched the gains as closely as possible by using a mix of transistors and an important biasing resistor and a capacitor that were a much different value than stated on the components and schematic. Each Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian features specially modified pots that are responsible for keeping the low-mid range from getting to mucky and which are also a factor in the more over-drive type quality these Russians can produce. This boxy-growl also helps make them particularly great on bass, and fantastic for growling, raunchy, less friendly guitar tones with a nasty snarl. The lows have an overdriven compression that keeps things tight, and the highs have a rich upper-harmonic thing going on that'll make one understand the affection some have for this pedal. The mids have the standard Muff-scoop but it is not as pronounced as some of the other generations. Add to that a less gainy / fuzzy tone overall and you end up with a unique Muff with a character all its own.

Das Wren and Cuff Hangman-2D ist eine detailgetreue Nachbildung des berühmten schwarz-orangen HM-2 Heavy Metal Distortion Pedals. Wie bei vielen von Wren and Cuffs Nachbildungen wurde es zu einer Besessenheit und zu einer schwierigen Aufgabe, den Ton richtig zu treffen und wie üblich ging es weit über eine einfache Kopie des Schaltplans hinaus. Die von Hand verdrahtete und besetzte Platine mit 1/4-Watt Metallschichtwiderständen anstelle der 1/8-Watt Kohleschichtwiderstände des Originals reduziert das Grundrauschen deutlich und betont gleichzeitig die harmonischen Obertöne. Dazu kommen die üblichen Features und Verbesserungen, die man von Wren and Cuff kennt: ein komplett mechanischer True Hard-Wire Bypass, robuste Alpha Potis aus Metall, die direkt am Gehäuse montiert sind, ein Modern / Vintage Kippschalter, ein robustes Metallgehäuse und ein wunderschönes Artwork. Das Spektrum möglicher Sounds reicht von einer stark komprimierten, straffen, smoothen Distortion bis hin zu einer knurrenden, aggressiven, 'sägenden' Verzerrung, die jeden Anschlag brachial betont. Überraschenderweise verzichtet das Pedal bewusst auf den übertriebenen Mid-Scoop, den man normalerweise mit Heavy Metal Sounds verbindet. Über die Highs- und Lows-Regler lässt sich der Sound zusätzlich anpassen. Während der Lows-Regler klassisch das Low-End im Signal verstärkt oder dämpft arbeitet der Highs-Regler etwas ungewöhnlich: die High-Mids im Signal sind so tight, dass der Regler eher wie ein Upper-Mids- bis Treble-Regler arbeitet. Das macht die Suche nach 'schönen' Sounds etwas schwieriger - aber das ist auch der Reiz daran. Das Hangman-2D ist - genau wie das Original - kein Pedal, in das man sich sofort verliebt, wenn man es einschaltet. Es ist ein Pedal, bei dem man den Sweetspot im Zusammenspiel zwischen dem Pedal und dem eigenen Verstärker suchen muss. Das Hangman-2D verfügt über einen Vintage / Modern Schalter, mit dem sich die Clipping-Dioden neu konfigurieren lassen. So kann man zwischen dem klassischen Standard-Sound und einem weniger komprimierten Sound mit mehr Overdrive-Anteilen und zusätzlichem Output Boost wählen.

The Wren and Cuff Hangman-2D is a detailed recreation of the famous black and orange HM-2 Heavy Metal Distortion pedal. As with many of Wren and Cuff's recreations, it became an obsession and a difficult task to really nail the tone. As usual, it went way beyond getting a schematic. It became a task requiring ears and hours. Also, a hand-wired, hand-loaded, circuit board using 1/4 watt metal film resistors instead of the 1/8 watt carbon film on the original is a nice thing if you like this pedal. The noise floor becomes dramatically less, and colorful overtones become much more apparent. Add to that the usual Wren and Cuff luxuries of 100% mechanical, true hard-wired bypass, rugged all metal Alpha pots mounted directly to the chassis, a Modern and Vintage toggle switch, tough metal enclosure and gorgeous artwork and one can see the value of the Hangman-2D over the original. This pedal can go from super compressed, tight, smooth distortion to a snarling buzz-saw monster that brings out every pick-to-string strike you throw at it. Surprisingly though, one trait it does not possess is the extreme scoop to the mids many associate with Heavy Metal tone. There is the Lows knob which functions as one would expect, and a Highs knob to help shape the tone. But the Highs knob is kind of an odd ball in how it effects things. The high-mids are tied together so that the Highs knob is more of a upper-mids to treble control which can make getting great sounds out of it a bit tricky - but this is also the charm of it. It's not a pedal all will turn on and immediately fall in love with. It's a pedal that will make you search for the sweet spot between the pedal's own crunch and the amp it's being fed into. The Hangman-2D features a Vintage / Modern switch that lets you to reconfigure the clipping diodes allowing you bounce between the classic standard at one setting, and a less compressed more overdrive-meets-distortion sound as well as a boost to the output level.

Matthew Holl (owner of Wren and Cuff) has had a working relationship with J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. for many years now. After years of working together, Matthew approached J with the idea of doing a signature pedal based on J's favorite vintage Muff pedal. That pedal, an early '70s Ram's Head Muff purchased by J on tour in 1987, was the model used to create the Garbage Face. Matthew and J worked together to ensure that the final unit was a dead-on replica of his treasured pedal. That idea became The Garbage Face, J's full-size dual volume Fuzz / Treble Booster signature pedal. Following its release, there were requests for a stripped-down three knob version of the distortion side of that pedal only - the Garbage Face Jr. answers that request.
