Die Muff Seite ist ein Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian Fuzz (eine detailgetreue Nachbildung der ersten grünen Tall Font Muff Pedale, die in Russland gebaut wurden) mit ein paar kleinen Anpassungen und Erweiterungen. Das Fuzz bietet ein tightes Low-End mit Overdrive-ähnlicher Kompression und eine präsente, klare Treble-Range, vermischt mit einem legendären Tone und einer etwas raueren, direkteren Note, die bei den 'Civil War' Muffs nicht zu finden ist. Im Vergleich zum Standard Tall Font Russian hat die Muff Seite des Super Russian etwas mehr Output Volume und einen zusätzlichen Kippschalter, der zwischen dem charakteristischen Muff Mid-Scoop und einem Flat-EQ Setting in den Mitten wählt. Die Fuzz-Sektion verfügt außerdem über den schaltbaren 'Creamy Dreamer' Mod, der zusätzlich mehr Gain und einen Output Boost aktiviert. Die Buffer-Boost Seite ist eine separate kristallklare, transparente Germanium Buffered-Boost-Sektion, die vor die Muff-Sektion geschaltet ist, um den Sound noch stärker in die Sättigung zu bringen. Der Buffered-Boost lässt sich auch ohne das Fuzz nutzen, um den Clean Sound 'fetter' zu machen oder um das Front-End des Verstärkers oder anderer Effektpedale zu pushen.

The Wren and Cuff Super Russian combines a Muff section and a transparent germanium buffered boost section in an extremely versatile effects pedal. The Muff side is basically a Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian fuzz (a precise recreation of the first green Tall Font Muff pedals built in Russia) with some little tweaks and adjustments. The fuzz provides a tight low-end with overdriven compression and a present and clear treble range, mixed with a legendary tone and a slight gritty edge and a rudeness, which is not found in the 'Civil War' Muffs. Compared to the standard Tall Font Russian fuzz, the Muff side of the Super Russian has a bit more output volume and comes with a toggle switch for the EQ setting that selects between the characteristic Muff mid-scoop and a flat EQ setting in the mids. The fuzz section also features the fabled 'Creamy Dreamer' mod to send things into a rich hyper-drive on command. The buffer-boost side is a separate crystal-clear transparent germanium buffered boost, placed before the Muff section to push things even harder if needed. This buffered boost can also be used on its own as a beautiful tool to beef up the clean tone or to use it to push another pedal later down the chain.

J Mascis ist in jeder Hinsicht eine echte Gitarrenlegende und seine Band Dinosaur Jr. beeinflusste viele der Bands, die den Sound der 90er prägten - Bands wie Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney und zu viele andere, um sie zu zählen. Fragt man fast jede Punk- oder Grunge-Band aus dieser Zeit (und von heute), ob sie von J Mascis gehört haben, und man wird nur verwirrte Blicke ernten, dass man überhaupt fragen muss. Mascis' Verbindung mit dem Big Muff ist als einer der Hauptbausteine des Dinosaur Jr.-Sounds gut dokumentiert. Es ist also verständlich, dass die Muff-Experten von Wren and Cuff anriefen, als die Idee für ein Signature Pedal aufkam. Nach mehr als 2 Jahren Entwicklungsarbeit ist dieses Pedal endlich da. Das Garbage Face ist eine exakte, bin ins kleinste Detail akkurate Nachbildung von Mascis' Nummer 1 Muff Pedal seit 1987 und dabei nicht nur irgendein Ram's Head aus den 70ern - J's Pedal ist ein seltsamer Vogel mit 'falschen' Bauteil-Werten und Komponenten-Werten, die sich im Laufe der fast 50-jährigen Reise weit von den ursprünglichen Werten entfernt haben. Auf der anderen Seite des Pedals befindet sich eine Nachbildung von Js bevorzugtem Germanium Treble Booster, mit dem er den Input des Muffs 'befeuert'. Zwischen den beiden Sektionen befindet sich ein wunderbar einfaches, aber unglaublich nützliches Werkzeug - ein zweiter Lautstärke-Regler mit eigenem Fußschalter, mit dem man zwischen zwei Muff Volume Outputs wählen kann!

A bonafide guitar legend by any standard, his band Dinosaur Jr. toured with and influenced many of the bands that defined the 90's - bands like Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, and too many others to count. Ask nearly any punk or grunge band from that era (and of today) if they've heard of J Mascis, and you'll get a look like you're a fool for even having to ask. His association with the Big Muff is well documented as one of the main building blocks of the Dinosaur Jr. sound. So, it is understandable that the Muff experts at Wren and Cuff would be the ones calling when the idea for a signature pedal came about. After more than 2 years in the making, that pedal is finally here. A part-by-part recreation of J's number one Muff since 1987, the Garbage Face is not just any '70s Ram's Head - J's pedal is an odd bird with parts values that are 'incorrect' and component values that have drifted far from their original values during its near-50 year journey. On the other side of the pedal is a replication of J's favorite germanium treble booster that he uses to slam the input of said muffer. And nestled in between the two is a wonderfully simple but incredibly useful tool - a second volume knob with a footswitch to let you bounce between two Muff volume outputs!

Das Wren and Cuff Two Five Boost und Overdrive Pedal nutzt ein spezielles Schaltungs-Design mit einer Charge Pump für 25V Betrieb mit einem Standard 9V Eingang. 25V geben dem Pedal extrem viel Headroom, einen weiten Dynamik-Bereich, mehr Output und einen offenen Charakter. Das Ansprechverhalten ist extrem dynamisch und das komplette Feeling unterscheidet sich deutlich von anderen Overdrive Pedalen. Die EQ-Sektion ist wie das Tone Stack bei Vintage Verstärkern aufgebaut, bei denen die einzelnen Regler interaktiv untereinander agieren. Dreht als Beispiel man den Highs-Regler herunter, bedämpft man damit nicht nur die Höhen, sondern betont auch leicht die Bässe. Dieses Zusammenspiel der Regler ermöglicht ein unglaublich breites Spektrum an möglichen Sounds, das weit über die klassischen High-Pass / Low-Pass Setups hinausgeht. Der Voice Kippschalter wählt zwischen zwei verschiedenen Clipping-Einstellungen: In der oberen Einstellung werden zwei Mosfet Transistoren und eine Germanium Diode genutzt, um einen kräftigen Drive mit sattem Gain zu erzeugen. In der unteren Einstellung werden zwei LED für das Clipping verwendet. Das LED Clipping bietet einen größeren Dynamik-Bereich und einen offeneren, cleaneren Sound. Das Two Five verfügt außerdem über jede Menge Output - perfekt, um das Front-End des Verstärkers oder andere Drive Pedale in die Sättigung zu bringen.

The Wren and Cuff Two Five boost and overdrive pedal features a special circuit design with an internal charge pump for 25V operation with a standard 9V input. 25V opens things up considerably, creating an unusually wide dynamic range, more headroom, and more output. The response is super reactive, and the overall feel of the pedal is much different than a typical overdrive. It just feels powerful. The EQ section of the pedal is set up like the tone stacks on vintage amplifiers, which means that the controls are interactive in relation to one another. An example would be that turning down the treble will not only cut the higher frequencies, but also raise the lower frequencies a bit. This type of interaction opens up an almost endless palette of tones by adjusting the Lows, Mids, and Highs, as opposed to a simple high-pass / low-pass setup. The Voice switch allows you to configure the clipping section of the pedal in two different ways. With the Voice switch toggled down, there are two Mosfet transistors used as diodes, and a germanium diode as well used to create a super-rich, saturated gain. Flick the switch up, and two LEDs are used for the clipping. These LEDs have a much wider range of dynamics and lend to a more open, somewhat cleaner sound. The Two Five also provides a ton of output on tap, making it the perfect pedal to push the front-end of your amplifier or other drive pedals into natural overdrive and saturation.

Das Wren and Cuff Hangman-2D ist eine detailgetreue Nachbildung des berühmten schwarz-orangen HM-2 Heavy Metal Distortion Pedals. Wie bei vielen von Wren and Cuffs Nachbildungen wurde es zu einer Besessenheit und zu einer schwierigen Aufgabe, den Ton richtig zu treffen und wie üblich ging es weit über eine einfache Kopie des Schaltplans hinaus. Die von Hand verdrahtete und besetzte Platine mit 1/4-Watt Metallschichtwiderständen anstelle der 1/8-Watt Kohleschichtwiderstände des Originals reduziert das Grundrauschen deutlich und betont gleichzeitig die harmonischen Obertöne. Dazu kommen die üblichen Features und Verbesserungen, die man von Wren and Cuff kennt: ein komplett mechanischer True Hard-Wire Bypass, robuste Alpha Potis aus Metall, die direkt am Gehäuse montiert sind, ein Modern / Vintage Kippschalter, ein robustes Metallgehäuse und ein wunderschönes Artwork. Das Spektrum möglicher Sounds reicht von einer stark komprimierten, straffen, smoothen Distortion bis hin zu einer knurrenden, aggressiven, 'sägenden' Verzerrung, die jeden Anschlag brachial betont. Überraschenderweise verzichtet das Pedal bewusst auf den übertriebenen Mid-Scoop, den man normalerweise mit Heavy Metal Sounds verbindet. Über die Highs- und Lows-Regler lässt sich der Sound zusätzlich anpassen. Während der Lows-Regler klassisch das Low-End im Signal verstärkt oder dämpft arbeitet der Highs-Regler etwas ungewöhnlich: die High-Mids im Signal sind so tight, dass der Regler eher wie ein Upper-Mids- bis Treble-Regler arbeitet. Das macht die Suche nach 'schönen' Sounds etwas schwieriger - aber das ist auch der Reiz daran. Das Hangman-2D ist - genau wie das Original - kein Pedal, in das man sich sofort verliebt, wenn man es einschaltet. Es ist ein Pedal, bei dem man den Sweetspot im Zusammenspiel zwischen dem Pedal und dem eigenen Verstärker suchen muss. Das Hangman-2D verfügt über einen Vintage / Modern Schalter, mit dem sich die Clipping-Dioden neu konfigurieren lassen. So kann man zwischen dem klassischen Standard-Sound und einem weniger komprimierten Sound mit mehr Overdrive-Anteilen und zusätzlichem Output Boost wählen.

The Wren and Cuff Hangman-2D is a detailed recreation of the famous black and orange HM-2 Heavy Metal Distortion pedal. As with many of Wren and Cuff's recreations, it became an obsession and a difficult task to really nail the tone. As usual, it went way beyond getting a schematic. It became a task requiring ears and hours. Also, a hand-wired, hand-loaded, circuit board using 1/4 watt metal film resistors instead of the 1/8 watt carbon film on the original is a nice thing if you like this pedal. The noise floor becomes dramatically less, and colorful overtones become much more apparent. Add to that the usual Wren and Cuff luxuries of 100% mechanical, true hard-wired bypass, rugged all metal Alpha pots mounted directly to the chassis, a Modern and Vintage toggle switch, tough metal enclosure and gorgeous artwork and one can see the value of the Hangman-2D over the original. This pedal can go from super compressed, tight, smooth distortion to a snarling buzz-saw monster that brings out every pick-to-string strike you throw at it. Surprisingly though, one trait it does not possess is the extreme scoop to the mids many associate with Heavy Metal tone. There is the Lows knob which functions as one would expect, and a Highs knob to help shape the tone. But the Highs knob is kind of an odd ball in how it effects things. The high-mids are tied together so that the Highs knob is more of a upper-mids to treble control which can make getting great sounds out of it a bit tricky - but this is also the charm of it. It's not a pedal all will turn on and immediately fall in love with. It's a pedal that will make you search for the sweet spot between the pedal's own crunch and the amp it's being fed into. The Hangman-2D features a Vintage / Modern switch that lets you to reconfigure the clipping diodes allowing you bounce between the classic standard at one setting, and a less compressed more overdrive-meets-distortion sound as well as a boost to the output level.
