Der Small Stone von Electro Harmonix ist ein Phaser-Pedal, das 1974 von David Cockerell entwickelt wurde. Im Gegensatz zu seinem Hauptrivalen, dem MXR Phase 90, der einen JFET-Transistor verwendet, um die Frequenz seiner vier Stufen zu variieren, ist seine Schaltung um einen Transkonduktanz-OP-Verstärker herum aufgebaut. Der Small Stone wurde unter anderem von David Gilmour und David Bowies Gitarristen Carlos Alomar verwendet und war von Anfang an ein großer Erfolg, so dass er noch immer im Katalog der in Long Island ansässigen Marke zu finden ist.

The Small Stone from Electro Harmonix is a phaser pedal that was developed by David Cockerell in 1974. Unlike its main rival, the MXR Phase 90, which uses a JFET transistor to vary the frequency of its four stages, its circuit is built around a transconductance op-amp. Used by David Gilmour and David Bowie's guitarist Carlos Alomar, among others, the Small Stone was a huge success from the start, so much so that it can still be found in the Long Island-based brand's catalog.

Was ist daran so besonders?

Die meisten E-Gitarren sind mit passiven Tonabnehmern ausgestattet und haben eine entsprechend hohe Ausgangsimpedanz. Bei Verwendung eines Gitarrenkabels von 6m oder länger geht im Höhenbereich je länger je mehr vom Gitarren-Sound verloren. Ein Puffer kompensiert diese Signalbeeinträchtigung und somit den Sound-Verlust für lange Kabel – selbst, wenn die Stimmfunktion aus ist.

Der ULTRA-BUFFER verbessert die Klangqualität im Bypass-Betrieb und erhält bei Verwendung eines langen Kabels somit den Sound, ganz gleich, ob es direkt mit dem Tuner oder zunächst mit einem komplexen Effekt-Board verbunden ist.

Der Pitchblack XS erlaubt Wechsel zwischen dem True Bypass- und dem Ultra Buffer-Modus, um in jeder Lebenslage den optimalen Sound zu erzielen.

The Pitchblack XS not only features a true bypass for outputting the sound exactly as it was input, but now includes a built-in ULTRA BUFFER.

Why is this important?

The majority of electric guitars use passive pickups with a high impedance output. When you are using a cable there is a loss of tone, usually high frequencies, after about 6 m (around 18 feet) and this problem gets worse the longer your cable. A buffer boosts the signal over long cables to avoid loss of tone, keeping it clean and clear - even when your pedal is off.

The ULTRA BUFFER enhances the sound quality in bypass mode, so that you can still maintain audio quality even when using a long cable to connect to the tuner, or when inserting the tuner into a complex effects board.

On the Pitchblack XS, you can switch between true bypass and the ULTRA BUFFER, according to your tastes and environment.

Es bietet eine Verzögerungszeit von bis zu 600 ms, was bei maximal aufgedrehtem Feedback-Regler zu wilder Selbstdoszillation führen kann. Eine sorgfältig abgestimmte Reihe von Filtern in der Feedback-Schaltung sorgt für warme, musikalische Wiederholungen. The Bucket Brigade Analog Delay is a tough, compact delay pedal featuring a classic Bucket Brigade Device (BBD) circuit for an authentic, vintage analog vibe. It offers a delay time of up to 600ms, which can lead to wild self-oscillation when the Feedback knob is maxed. A carefully crafted series of filters in the feedback circuit ensures warm, musical repeats. In Betrieb genommen wird das TC NOVA durch Einstecken des Netzkabels. Schade, denn ein Netzschalter wäre hier sicher eine nicht zu kostspielige und bequemere Art gewesen. Schon beim ersten Durchsteppen der Presets zeigt sich ein angenehm harmonischer und gut durchsetzungsfähiger Grundsound. Das von TC Electronic benannte NDT-System (NOVA DRIVE TECHNOLOGY) für Distortion-Sounds kann überzeugen und liefert, egal ob im nur leicht crunchigen Betrieb oder bei hohen Verzerrungsgraden, jederzeit ein sauberes, matschfreies und dynamisches Klangbild. Auch die Modulationseffekte wie Chorus, Delay und Reverb können überzeugen und bieten mit ihren reichhaltigen Parametern eine sehr hohe klangliche Dichte, wenn gleich man sich beim tieferen Editieren schon durch ein mehrseitiges Menü hangeln muss. Doch das kann sich lohnen, wie etwa beim Intelligent Pitch-Shifter, der nach Eingabe der entsprechenden Tonart immerhin mit bis zu dreistimmigen Voicings (und das ohne eine spürbare Latenz beim spielen) aufwarten kann.
