In the past couple of years, Chinese pedal maker NUX has been releasing some not too subtle (and incredibly affordable) clones of several best-selling classic stompboxes under the rather misleadingly named “Reissue Series” (uhm, reissues of pedals… made by other builders?). Nothing wrong with cloning (almost everyone does it) we are just a little perplexed by the use of the “reissue” word.

Even just the color of their Analog Delay betrays the influence of classic Ibanez / Maxon three-knob Bucket Brigade Device delays from the ’80s. That’s exactly what you get with this pedal: the warm repeats of the 3205 and 3102 BBD chips, for just under $60!

You can judge from the videos below if the Nux Analog Delay sounds as good as the units that inspired it. We added this pedal to our list of the Best Analog Delay Pedals.

Die 'Amplitude' Sektion des Pedals basiert auf dem klassischen 'White Face' Distortion Pedal, die Schaltung wurde jedoch um drei wählbare Clipping-Modi erweitert. Die erste Position (No Diode OpAmp Drive) bietet einen satten Drive bei maximalem Volume. Die zweite Position nutzt zwei Silizium-Dioden und eine LED in einer asymmetrischen Clipping-Konfiguration und erzeugt einen leicht komprimierten, smoothen Crunch, der an einen übersteuerten Verstärker erinnert. Die dritte Position nutzt zwei Silizium-Dioden und erzeugt den klassischen 'White Face' Sound. Die Octave-Up Sektion arbeitet komplett analog und lässt sich über einen Regler oder ein optionales Expression Pedal stufenlos mit der Verzerrung mischen. Der monophone Effekt arbeitet am 'saubersten' mit einzelnen Noten oberhalb des 12. Bundes, die über den Neck Pickup gespielt werden. Akkorde erzeugen einen chaotischen, 'scheppernden' Sound. Dreht man den Octave-Regler voll auf erzeugt das Sunn O))) Life Pedal V2 einen dreckigen, wütenden Fuzz-Sound, der an das Super Fuzz erinnert. Die 'Magnitude' Sektion ist ein MOSFET Booster, der Röhrenverstärker in die Sättigung treibt. Der Booster arbeitet komplett clean und fügt dem Signal selbst keine Verzerrung hinzu, bietet dafür aber ein extrem hohes Output Level um das Front End des Amps zu pushen. Der Signalweg geht Octave > Distortion > Boost, dabei lassen sich beide Sektionen unabhängig voneinander nutzen.

The EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) Life Pedal V3 offers distortion, boost and an adjustable octave-up effect in a compact effects pedal. The 'Amplitude' section of the pedal is based on the classic 'White Face' distortion pedal, but the circuitry has been expanded to include three selectable clipping modes. The first position (No Diode OpAmp Drive) offers a rich drive at maximum volume. The second position uses two silicon diodes and a LED in an asymmetrical clipping configuration and produces a slightly compressed, smooth crunch reminiscent of an overdriven amp. The third position uses two silicon diodes and produces the classic 'white face' sound. The Octave-Up section is completely analogue and can be mixed with the distortion via a knob or an optional expression pedal. The 'Magnitude' section is a MOSFET booster that drives tube amps into saturation. The booster works completely clean and adds no distortion to the signal itself, but offers an extremely high output level to push the front end of the amp. The signal path goes Octave > Distortion > Boost, and both sections can be used independently of each other.

Obwohl es sich bei den beiden um alteingesessene Standard-Effektsounds handelt, versteht es der amerikanische Boutique-Hersteller, mit einigen Extras jenseits der Norm Interesse zu wecken.
So auch bei der Julia, bei der beispielsweise fließend mit einem Blend-Regler zwischen Chorus und Vibrato gewechselt werden kann. Dazu lässt ein Schalter die Wahl, den LFO zu Sinus- oder Dreieck-Wellenformen zu überreden. Was diese Funktionen klanglich bewirken, schauen wir uns im Folgenden an.

The Grand Orbiter is a four stage analog phaser that offers classic and unconventional phaser and vibrato sounds, it can go from stationary and resonant to fast and swirly. The Grand Orbiter can be turned from phaser to vibrato via a dedicated switch and features a three way toggle switch to select between the ranges of modulation. One of these ranges, kills the LFO and allows the Grand Orbiter to work as a fixed resonant filter. The three ranges offer the following modes: Slow Sweep, Fixed Resonance and Fast Sweep. The Rate control allows to fine tune the speed of the LFO in each one of the modes. It can be activated in standard latching operation or in momentary operation, by just holding the footswitch down for as long as you'd use the effect. Mit 10 Megaohm Eingangsimpedanz bietet das Pedal einen wunderbar klaren, detaillierten Sound. Der Arbeitsbereich des Tone-Reglers wurde ebenfalls angepasst um mit einem satteren Low End ein breiteres Spektrum an möglichen Sounds zu bieten. 

Zusätzlich bietet der Plumes drei wählbare Clipping-Modi um den Sound des Pedals an möglichst viele Stilrichtungen und unterschiedlichstes Equipment anpassen zu können. Mode 1 bietet symmetrisches Clipping, basierend auf einem Paar LEDs. Das Setting bietet den sattesten Crunch und den klassischen Sound eines übersteuerten Röhrenverstärkers. Mode 2 ist ein Clean Boost ohne Soft Clipping, perfekt um den Clean Sound im Mix nach vorne zu bringen oder den Preamp eines Verstärkers in die Sättigung zu fahren. Mode 3 nutzt asymmetrisches Clipping mit Silizium Dioden und klingt am ehesten nach einem originalen Screamer. Im direkten Vergleich liefert das Setting aber mehr Output und klarere Clean Sounds.

Darüber hinaus verfügt der Plumes auch über EarthQuaker Devices 'Soft Touch' Flexi-Switch-Funktion, mit der du im Handumdrehen zwischen Momentary Modus und traditionellem Latching wählen kannst.

The EarthQuaker Devices Plumes is based on the legendary green overdrive pedal, which has been the industry standard for decades. In combination with a good tube amp, the Plumes creates a warm, transparent saturation. EarthQuaker Devices relinquishes the trusted JRC4558 OpAmp and BJT Buffers and replaces them with low noise JFET OpAmps for a more robust and precise signal with a significantly lower noise floor. With 10 megohms of input impedance, the pedal provides a stronger signal with more clarity and chime. EarthQuaker Devices adjusted the cutoff of the tone control to deliver a more useful range of travel with more booming bass on the low end without sacrificing the cutting midrange and bright top end.

In addition, the Plumes offers three selectable clipping modes to ensure that it will work with a wide variety of gear and playing styles. Mode 1 is symmetrical clipping based on a pair of LEDs. This is the crunchiest setting the Plumes has to offer. When played through a clean amp, it will deliver that classic crunchy valve amp tone. Mode 2 is a clean boost without soft clipping and with straight OpAmp drive, perfect for pushing your clean tone out in front or driving the preamp of an already overdriven amp into breakup saturation. Mode 3 is an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement like an original screamer but with more output and clean clarity.

The Plumes features EarthQuaker Devices relay-based 'soft touch' Flexi-Switch Technology for both momentary and latching footswitch operation.
