Mit dem MXR Il Torino aus dem MXR Custom Shop stellt sich heute ein Overdrive-Pedal dem bonedo-Test, das mit einem etwas höheren Anspruch antritt, als die meisten anderen Effektpedale des Traditionsherstellers. Einen Custom Shop gibt es also nicht nur für Gitarren wie zum Beispiel bei Fender oder Gibson, sondern auch für Effektpedale, wie wir hier sehen. Das dürfte auch damit zusammenhängen, dass das inzwischen ohnehin sehr große Angebot an Boutique-Geräten jeden Tag weiter wächst und Massenhersteller wie MXR sich etwas einfallen lassen müssen, um in diesem Marktsegment nicht ins Hintertreffen zu geraten.

The Roto Choir recreates both the rotating lower speaker and the treble rotor horn –the only way to attain that complex, multi-dimensional tone. In fact, the Roto Choir utilizes a specifically formulated SansAmp technology to deliver the entire signal chain –from the original tube power amp to the speaker and high-frequency rotor horn, to the microphone used to capture it. This is HD, 3D emulation.

The simple controls hide a wealth of options. Drive adds just the right amount of compression, harmonics and grit. Low and High sculpt the tube amp emulation with powerful EQ curves. The Fast/Slow footswitch allows users to ramp up, slow down or even stop the rotating speaker. There’s also a dedicated control to custom set the Top Speed of your rotor. Want to vary the intensity of the effect? Simply adjust the Position control to move the Roto Choir’s virtual mic closer or further from the horns. Other features include a biamped/single-speaker mode switch, stereo output and a Speaker Sim switch for direct recording.

Das Catalinbread Belle Epoch Delay-Effektpedal orientiert sich am Sound des legendären Maestro Echoplex EP-3, das in den 1970er Jahren zum Arsenal diverser Helden des Rock gehörte, darunter solche Namen wie Brian May, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour oder Eric Johnson. Sie setzten das Delay oft und gerne ein, neben dem warm klingenden Bandecho-Sound auch wegen seines Preamps, mit dem man einen Amp noch etwas heißer anfahren und zu etwas mehr Zerre überreden konnte.

 The Catalinbread Belle Epoch Tape Echo, has tape echo sounds so authentic you’d swear there was tape inside the pedal! Inspired by the Maestro Echoplex, EP-3 model, perhaps the most famous tape delay ever, the Belle Epoch features everything we love about the EP-3 in a small, maintenance free pedal format. We felt that a “tape echo” pedal was much more than just a standard digital delay with some “filtering” on the repeats. There are a lot of subtle and not-so-subtle traits of the Echoplex that needed to be implemented in order to be authentic. The preamp, the self-oscillation character, the ability to control the “record level” of the signal hitting “tape”, the wow and flutter, the way the repeats decay, the way the circuit interfaces with the amp and other pedals – all these things were important to get right. The original unit was used as a musical instrument unto itself and this is what we captured with the Belle Epoch.

Featuring a unique circuit design, the MXR FET Driver captures the rich, creamy sound of an overdriven tube amplifier by cascading an op-amp gain stage into a FET stage. The FET Driver thickens up lead tones with musical, amp-like distortion and sustain without the fragility and inconsistency associated with tubes.

The FET Driver features a simple but responsive set of controls. We borrowed his amps so that the MXR team could carefully analyze all the sonic qualities that make them sound so darn good. After much analysis and A/B testing, our engineers rebuilt the amps from scratch in pedal circuit form and fit them into a single housing. The High Gain and Crunch Gain sections each have their own controls, while the Blend control allows you to mix them together just like Green Day did in the studio. Layers bases its main experience off a threefold sustain effect that deals in, its namesake, layers. Three onboard sustain layers play concurrently to one another to fashion complex and interesting weaves of notes, as triggered by a variety of methods. By utilizing the dedicated footswitch, Layers can be played manually to sustain notes or remotely by playing dynamics. The pedal’s Trigger knob control can be used to adjust the sensitivity of the automatic trigger sustain function or disable it altogether to offer early insight into this pedal’s options of interactivity.
