THE COYOTE - The Fuzz You've Never Played Before
The Coyote is an extraordinary octave fuzz pedal based on a long-forgotten circuit. With just one control, it combines three sonic worlds: swell, fuzz, and octave. It draws its inspiration from the extremely rare Moonrock Fuzz by American tinkerer Glenn S. Wyllie, who once handcrafted his pedals.
What makes this circuit special is the unusual use of a transformer. Unlike classic octave fuzz pedals, here it doesn't generate the octave, but rather, as an inductive element, shapes the behavior of the fuzz stage. This creates a unique dynamic and tonal structure that is distinctly different from familiar fuzz designs.
The central Swell/Fuzz/Octave control moves continuously through three ranges:
At its far left position, it creates a swell effect, where notes enter with a slowly swelling, almost backward-sounding character. In its center position, the Coyote delivers a powerful, mid-focused fuzz sound that also reproduces chords with punch. All the way to the right, it produces an aggressive octave-up fuzz, where strong overtones create the typical, biting octave tone.
The pedal's high dynamic range is particularly noteworthy. When the guitar's volume control is turned down, the Coyote reacts extremely sensitively to picking attack and playing style - a characteristic very rare among octave fuzz pedals.
For a classic sound, it's recommended to use it at the beginning of the effects chain, ideally in combination with a slightly overdriven amplifier or an overdrive pedal.
