Jimi Hendrix erschien 1966 in London und das damals neue Arbiter Electronics Fuzz Face wurde sein bevorzugtes Fuzz-Pedal - der Rest ist Geschichte. In den ersten Jahren wurde das Fuzz Face mit Germanium-Transistoren gebaut bis das Pedal 1969 komplett auf Silizium-Transistoren umgestellt wurde. Hendrix selbst bevorzugte die Silizium-Version wegen des aggressiveren, bissigeren Sounds und natürlich wegen der besseren Beständigkeit. Der JHS Pedals Smiley bietet eine klanggetreue Nachbildung der Eigenschaften, die die frühen Silizium Fuzz Faces bis heute zu einem Meilenstein der Musikgeschichte machen. Mehrere Vintage Pedale wurden sorgfältig analysiert um die Magie dieser Ära mit dem Smiley perfekt einzufangen. In 1966 Jimi Hendrix arrived in London and adopted the Arbiter Electronics Fuzz Face as his weapon of choice, and the rest is history. The first few years of the Fuzz Face were manufactured using germanium transistors but by 1969, germanium fully gave way to silicon devices and Arbiter never looked back. Hendrix himself preferred the silicon versions over germanium because of their sound, aggressive bite, and their stability in environments where germanium proved inconsistent. The JHS Pedals Smiley is a sonically faithful recreation of what makes these early silicon Fuzz Faces great. Several vintage units were considered and analyzed so that JHS Pedals could be sure to perfectly capture the magic that everyone loves in this era. The Smiley is clear and defined, straddling the line between distortion pedal and a searing sustain, sustaining low end and crisp mid-range bite that you expect from a vintage Arbiter unit. One of the most revered characteristics of a good Fuzz Face is its ability to clean up when the guitar's volume is rolled back, and the Smiley does this effortlessly. The controls are Volume and Fuzz. Volume sets the overall output level of the effect; turn it up and it gets louder. Das JHS Artificial Blonde Madison Cunningham Signature Pedal ist im Grunde eine unkomplizierte Annäherung an Madisons Signature-Sound: ein immer eingeschalteter, leicht dreidimensionaler Vibrato-Sound. Der zweite Fußschalter schaltet zwischen den beiden Speed/Depth Preset-Sektionen um. Dies ist ein echtes Pitch-Vibrato-Modulationspedal mit zwei leicht zugänglichen Modi für den Live-Einsatz. Dieses flexible und charakteristische Vibrato Pedal bietet neben dem globalen Volume Regler einen aktiven Tilt-EQ. Durch Drehen nach links werden die Tiefen angehoben und die Höhen abgesenkt, während durch Drehen nach rechts die Höhen angehoben und die Tiefen abgesenkt werden. Mit dem linken Fußschalter kann der Effekt eingeschaltet werden und mit dem rechten schaltet man das Preset A oder B. Jedes Preset hat die gleiche Speed/Depth Range und ermöglicht zwei verschiedene schaltbare Einstellungen.

The JHS Artificial Blonde Madison Cunningham Signature Pedal is basically a simple approach to Madison's signature sound: an always-on, slightly three-dimensional vibrato sound. The secondary footswitch switches between the two speed/depth preset sections. It is a true pitch vibrato modulation pedal with two easy to access modes for live use. This flexible and distinctive vibrato pedal features an active tilt EQ in addition to the global volume control. Turning it to the left boosts the lows and cuts the highs, while turning it to the right boosts the highs and cuts the lows. The left footswitch turns the effect on and the right one switches preset A or B. Each preset has the same speed/depth range and allows two different switchable settings.

In 1966 the electric guitar was still in its infancy. As early as the mid-1940's guitarist had discovered the magic of turning up their valve amplifiers to create overdrive and distortion, but this sound was a very new frontier. In 1962 we saw the first mass-produced fuzz box in the Maestro Fuzz-Tone as well as the second-ever in 1965 by Sola Sound, the Tonebender. These fuzz boxes produced massive amounts of distortion and fuzz within themselves, even if your amp's tone was clean. In 1966 a company called Dallas Musical LTD who was known for producing amplifiers and guitars released something different, a first of its kind. The name of this effect was the Rangemaster Treble Booster. It wasn't a pedal but a stand-alone box with no footswitch that sat on your amplifier. The Rangemaster is similar in design to what we consider a fuzz to be, but the sound is not. In 1966, English manufactured amplifiers such as Vox and Marshall were much darker than the American made Fenders. This new effect unit allowed you to boost the middle and high-frequency range of your guitar into these darker amps so that you could achieve a brighter and more aggressive tone that would cut through a band mix. It also gave the guitarist a powerful amount of boost/volume that could push the preamp valves into beautifully overdriven and distorted tones. This circuit gave us some of the most beloved tones in guitar history as players like Rory Gallagher, Brian May, Tony Iommi, Marc Bolan, and Billy Gibbons made it their secret weapon. As with most classic fuzz pedals, it loves a dirty amp or overdrive afterward in the signal path. Staying true to the original, I used high-grade carbon composition resistors, oversized capacitors, and a single germanium transistor that I hand-selected. 

Each small batch of Boosts will use different transistors as it is challenging to find reliable sources of these devices in large quantities. The circuit uses vintage positive ground voltage, so do not daisy chain your power with other pedals. Inside the pedal is a battery snap or use any isolated power supply with a normal polarity power cable like your other pedals as I have wired it internally to work that way. The Boost is identical to the original except that I adjusted the taper of the pot to feel more intuitive. I also added a single power supply filter capacitor to help with noise and pull-down resistance to relieve switch pop. The switching is true-bypass. Each pedal in this batch is built-in identical form, but because of parts tolerances and the slight variance in the transistors, they will all be a bit different while still being the same. Be sure to always have this pedal first in your signal chain; the guitar must be plugged into its input due to the impedance it requires on its input, no exceptions.
