The Bonsai is JHS tribute to one of the greatest pedals ever created  the Tube Screamer. Following in the steps of their Muffuletta, the Bonsai utilizes a simple rotary knob to switch through nine classic, vintage, rare, or hard to find variations of the Screamer. The Bonsai is exact replication, not emulation.  When you choose a mode on the Bonsai rotary, you are actually activating components specific to each mode and playing the circuit Josh chose along with all the quirks, drift, vintage mojo, and individuality that a vintage pedal has.

Der Freq-Regler bietet - je nach internem Setting - einen Boost oder Cut bei 100 Hz bzw. 500 Hz, der Curve-Regler bedämpft je nach Bedarf die Höhen im Signal, falls der Sound zu aggressiv im Treble-Bereich wird. Das Spektrum an möglichen Sounds reicht von klar und definiert über einen satten, kräftigen Drive bis zu einer extrem 'dreckigen', rauen Verzerrung.

The Volume, Tone, and Drive controls cover the basic functions, while the Freq and Curve controls offer finer adjustment of your beastly sonic yield. The Freq control cuts or boosts at either 100Hz or 500Hz—set internally—while the Curve control allows you to soften the creature's roar if it gets too aggressive on the high end. If you’ve ever plugged your bass into a regular fuzz box and been unimpressed, it’s because they’re designed to limit the extreme low end allowed into the amp. This is fine for the 6-stringers, but not ideal at all for bass.
The Screamer Bass Fuzz is designed to fix this. Like the Screamer Bass, it’s Tube Screamer-inspired overdrive is modified for bass guitar, but with an additional fuzz circuit for EVEN MORE GAIN.

Sonically, the Voodoo-Bass is similar to that original Voodoo-1 pedal (as in Jimi's "Voodoo Chile"), giving anything from a slight natural crunch to a smooth powerful distortion. At maximum gain it makes a medium-sized combo sound like something about four times bigger, but without the over-compressed wall of noice associated with most stomp boxes. In fact it allows for very dynamic playing; chug a chord from soft-and-damped to loud-and-ringing and the pedal goes with you - from quiet and relatively clean to over-the-edge grunge. Alternatively, simply control your overall volume ( and hence amount of distortion ) from your guitar's volume knob. 
The Voodoo-Bass is designed to give a single coil pickup a gutsier tone, more like that of a classic humbucker. It definitely gets into same ball park... the low middle stays thick and constant no matter how the tone is set, and it's this region that has the humbucker character - a really handy approximation for someone wanting a change of sound at the press of a button." "The Blueberry Overdrive from Mad Professor offers a wide range of tones within quite a narrow part of the overall drive category. We’re talking about overdrive here, not clean boost, distortion or fuzz. Overdrive, baby!

Versatility is high and low at the same time in this case – low in the sense that it basically does one thing, and one thing alone. That said, the tonal possibilities within that limited range of ‘just’ overdrive, are quite amazing. And while you may argue that it is nothing but transparent and also adds compression that you can’t really control other than with playing dynamics, I find the drive both musical and pleasant when you find just the right setting which is relatively easy."
