Since the late ’70s and until today, this little orange pedal offers a compressed, British stack style distortion with an easy control layout – Distortion, Tone and Level.

The BOSS DS-1 is not a subtle pedal but not brutal either, it retains its characteristics with most type of pickups and it is really a great pedal for beginners and pros alike.

Der Small Stone von Electro Harmonix ist ein Phaser-Pedal, das 1974 von David Cockerell entwickelt wurde. Im Gegensatz zu seinem Hauptrivalen, dem MXR Phase 90, der einen JFET-Transistor verwendet, um die Frequenz seiner vier Stufen zu variieren, ist seine Schaltung um einen Transkonduktanz-OP-Verstärker herum aufgebaut. The Small Stone from Electro Harmonix is a phaser pedal that was developed by David Cockerell in 1974. Unlike its main rival, the MXR Phase 90, which uses a JFET transistor to vary the frequency of its four stages, its circuit is built around a transconductance op-amp. Used by David Gilmour and David Bowie's guitarist Carlos Alomar, among others, the Small Stone was a huge success from the start, so much so that it can still be found in the Long Island-based brand's catalog.

Forward oder Reverse Delay lassen sich, je nach Setting, einmal shiften oder können mit fortlaufend geshifteten Repeats arbeiten. Das Effektpedal bietet mit Modulated und Harmonized Delays, Reverse Delays, Chorus, Arpeggios, unendlichen Descents, chaotischer Selbst-Oszillation und sich ständig weiterentwickelnde Klanglandschaften ein extrem breites Spektrum an möglichen Sounds. Das Herz des Raster V2 ist ein cleanes Delay mit bis zu 1600 ms Delay-Time. Drei Delay-Ranges ermöglichen eine präzise Einstellung und bieten gleichzeitig die Möglichkeit schnell und flexibel auf Timing-Änderungen zu reagieren. Über den Feedback-Regler lassen sich unendliche Repeats oder chaotische Feedback Loops einstellen und der Tone-Regler reicht von dunklen, analog klingenden Repeats bis zu einer digitalen Klarheit, die die Attack im Signal deutlich betont. Die zwei Delay-Channel können wahlweise in Reihe, in Serie oder im Ping Pong arrangiert werden und gleichmäßig oder in unterschiedliche Richtungen geshiftet werden. Zusätzlich stehen mit dem Pitch Shifter Tempo-abhängige Arpeggios und abgedrehte Orgel-Sounds zur Verfügung, die der Kreativität und dem Klang-Design keine Grenzen setzen. Die Modulations-Sektion des Raster V2 kommt mit insgesamt sieben Wellenformen und kann der Delay-Time, dem Pitch Shift oder sogar dem Output Level zugewiesen werden. Mit sechs Reglern und neun Schaltern bleibt das Pedal trotz aller Features intuitiv bedienbar, dabei behält das Raster V2 die direkte Kontrolle, für die die Vorgänger-Version so gelobt wurde, und bietet zusätzlich eine flexible Modulation und einen True Stereo Betrieb. Die alternativen Funktionen der Regler stehen im direkten Zusammenhang mit der Hauptfunktion und sind zum besseren Verständnis klar beschriftet. Beide Fußschalter lassen sich, je nach Wunsch, als Latching oder Momentary Schalter nutzen. Bei der Entwicklung des Raster V2 wollten Red Panda Labs so viele klassische Rackmount Digital-Delay-Tricks wie möglich integrieren und gleichzeitig die schnelle und intuitive Steuerung beibehalten, die die Verwendung des ursprünglichen Rasters so unterhaltsam machte. Anstelle mehrerer Modi mit generischen Regler-Namen sind alle Parameter immer verfügbar, sodass sich verschiedene Effekte mischen und anpassen und zwischendurch neue Sounds erkunden lassen.

The Red Panda Raster V2 is a digital delay with a pitch and frequency shifter integrated into the feedback loop. Forward or reverse delay can be shifted once or have continuously shifted repeats. The effects pedal delivers a wide range of sounds including modulated and harmonized delays, reverse delays, chorus, arpeggios, infinite descents, chaotic self-oscillation, and continuously evolving soundscapes. The core of the Raster V2 is a clean delay with up to 1600 ms of delay time. Three delay ranges allow you to precisely dial in resonant feedback sounds and instantly change delay time with rhythmic shifts. The feedback control has infinite repeats at 3 o’clock and chaotic, textured feedback loops at higher levels. Knob responses are carefully tuned for exploration of self-oscillation and feedback on the verge of blowing up. A tone control sweeps from dark analog-style repeats to digital clarity and emphasizes the attack at higher settings. The left and right delay times can be set as a ratio, so a single knob changes both in sync. The two delay channels can be arranged in series, parallel or ping pong. Pitch shifting repeats up or down in semitone steps creates tempo-synced arpeggios and alien organ sounds. The detune setting can dial in micro pitch shifts and chorused repeats. The left and right channels can be shifted by the same amount, a ratio, or opposite directions. At subtle settings, repeats evolve in a way that sounds natural, but different from analog delays. Beyond pitch shifting, a combination phase/frequency shifter creates subtle evolving repeats, dissonant harmonies, and barber pole flanging. It can be pushed to extremes for ring modulation and inharmonic shifted delays that distort and break apart. The Raster’s modulation section has seven waveforms that can be assigned to delay time, pitch shift, or effect level (for tremolo). There are two random waveforms for glitchy sliced delays or random pitch shift, wow and flutter, and broken tape deck effects. Envelope and inverse envelope enable dynamic flanging and pitch bent delays. Stereo controls adjust the modulation amount and phase between channels, for subtle shifts or swirling psychedelic washes. Capable of extreme sonic mayhem, the Red Panda Raster V2 can also be used with restraint to add unique character to your sound. The Raster 2 is performance friendly, with 6 knobs and 9 switches. The original Raster was praised for its knob response and immediacy, and the Raster 2 maintains that simplicity while adding flexible modulation and extensive stereo functionality. Alternate knob settings are related to the primary knob function, labeled, and off at the center position. Both footswitches can be latching or momentary, for instant pitch jumps or quick blasts of echo. The bypass switch can also mute the output in bypass while always listening, to catch, repeat, and manipulate what you just played. While designing the Raster 2, Red Panda Labs wanted to enable as many classic rack mount digital delay tricks as possible while keeping the fast and intuitive control that made the original Raster so fun to use. Instead of multiple modes with generic knob names, all of the parameters are always available, so you can mix and match different effects and explore new sounds in between.

A uniquely designed steel enclosure made with quality components throughout. My goal was to spare no expense. I realize that sometimes in the world of guitar gear, there isn’t always one answer in choosing the best components and designs, so I just picked my favorites. This includes Switchcraft 11 open frame jacks, and a super quiet soft touch switching system via an internal relay.

I have been working on this project for the better part of three years, as a collaboration and with engineering by Jon Ashley of Bondi Effects. I feel that the pedal is unique in design and sonically unlike anything I have ever heard, especially in the lower gain and boost settings. There is a subtlety that feels more like a vintage pedal than a modification of a classic. There are two circuits present in the pedal, one distortion and one preamp boost, running at 18v via an internal voltage regulator. I made this pedal with the idea to create a distinction for my own sound, and what I found is that it is an extremely useful tool for capturing a lot of different types of sounds. I am most proud of the lower gain side, as I feel it is the most unique section of the pedal, but I must also include that the gain section is extremely sweet sounding throughout, especially for heavy and complex chords. There is a midrange punch that I love and a warmth and thickness that reminds me a bit of a ribbon mic. When the development of this pedal turned into something new and unique, it became the catalyst to starting 1981 Inventions, so I decided to make this the first official release.
