Im Kern ist Gross eine einfache Eintransistor-Verzerrung aus demselben Stammbaum wie die Electra-Schaltung. Dieser einfache, aber leistungsstarke Effekt wurde Ende der 70er Jahre in Electra-Gitarren eingebaut und später von vielen Boutique-Stompbox-Herstellern übernommen. Aus gutem Grund: Es ist eine lebendige, dynamisch reagierende Schaltung mit weniger Kompression als die meisten modernen IC-basierten Verzerrungspedale. Der Transistor erhöht den Pegel, und dann trifft das Signal auf ein Paar Clipping-Dioden, die für die charakteristische Verzerrung sorgen.

Das seltsamste Merkmal ist der Diodenabschnitt. Anstelle eines festen Diodenpaars wählen zwei 12-Positionen-Drehschalter aus 24 Dioden für 78 mögliche Diodenkombinationen! Ein zusätzlicher Schalter fügt eine dritte Diode für asymmetrische Verzerrung hinzu, was 156 mögliche Schattierungen ergibt. At its heart, Gross is a simple, one-transistor distortion from the same family tree as the Electra circuit. This simple yet powerful effect was built into Electra guitars in the late ’70s, and was later adopted by many boutique stompbox builders. For good reason: It’s a lively, dynamically responsive circuit with less compression than most modern IC-based distortion pedals. The transistor boosts the level, and then the signal hits a pair of clipping diodes, which provide the signature distortion.

The oddest feature is the diode section. Instead of a fixed diode pair, two 12-position rotary switches select from 24 diodes for 78 possible diode combinations! An additional switch adds a third diode for asymmetric distortion, which makes 156 possible shades. My target number was 144—that’s why I called it Gross (though that may have happened the other way around). [NOTE: The new version 2 has an additional 78 combinations for a total of 234.]

The dynamic response is simply astounding—you can go from crystalline to meltdown by touch and guitar knob settings alone. With your guitar volume rolled back, the tone is nearly indistinguishable from bypass, so you can literally leave Cult on all night and conjure a huge range of overdrive/distortion tones directly from your guitar.

Cult isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking for an overdrive to smooth out your sound for consistent, predictable results, run away! But if you’re the sort of player who likes sculpting sounds via touch and dynamics, or if you enjoy tones that walk the tightrope between clean and distorted, Cult can be a revelation.

Geschwindigkeit und Tiefe sind in einem eleganten Verhältnis verknüpft, das in allen Einstellungen einfach großartig klingt. Purr Vibrato

Die Drive- und Level-Regler tun, was man erwarten würde. Aber anders als viele Fuzz-Drive-Regler klingt dieser über seinen gesamten Bereich hinweg großartig. Extreme Einstellungen sind so dick wie geschmolzene Lava. Niedrigere Einstellungen sind wie … leicht abgekühlte Lava, vielleicht?

Aber die eigentliche Action steckt in den beiden Schiebereglern. Sie sind eine Art Klangregler, aber nicht auf die übliche Weise. Die meisten Fuzz-Klangregler sind tonaufsaugende passive Schaltkreise, die hinter dem Fuzz-Effekt angeordnet sind. Aber hier verändern die Schieberegler die Spannungen an den Transistoren und verändern nicht nur den Ton, sondern auch Klangfarbe, Reaktion, Attack, Sustain und Kompression radikal. Mit anderen Worten: Die Schieberegler verändern den Kerncharakter des Fuzz radikal, im Gegensatz zum einfachen EQing eines einzelnen Kerntons.

The drive and level controls do what you’d expect. But unlike many fuzz drive controls, this one sounds great throughout its range. Extreme settings are molten-lava thick. Lower settings are like…slightly cooled lava, maybe?

But the real action is in the two sliders. They’re tone controls of a sort, but not in the usual way. Most fuzz tone controls are tone-sucking passive circuits situated downstream from the fuzz effect. But here, the sliders alter the voltages at the transistors, radically changing not only the tone, but also the timbre, response, attack, sustain, and compression. In other words, the sliders radically alter the fuzz’s core character, as opposed to simply EQing a single core tone.
