Es war der Oktober im Jahr 1971, als die Mannen von Pink Floyd ihr berühmtes Werk „Live at the Pompeii“ im Amphitheater der gleichnamigen italienischen Stadt aufnahmen. Stets mit dabei war eines der wohl angesagtesten Effektgeräte der damaligen Zeit – das Binson Echorec. Wohl kaum ein anderes Gerät prägte so maßgeblich den Sound von Pink Floyd der frühen Jahre wie dieses Echogerät, dessen Prinzip auf einer rotierenden Magnetscheibe basierte, die mit vier Tonköpfen das Signal aufnahm bzw. abspielte. Dabei machte nicht nur Leadgitarrist Dave Gilmour vom Echorec gebrauch, auch Bassist Roger Waters und Tastenmann Richard Wright nutzen diese Maschine ausgiebig.

The Binson Echorec was so cool we had no choice but to bring it back. And we wanted to bring it back right. We wanted to take all the goodness of that huge Binson Echorec and squeeze it down into a standard sized stompbox without losing anything. In fact, in addition to not losing any of the qualities that made it such a compelling musical device, we wanted to EXTEND its capabilities because the original Binson hinted at possibilities that it couldn’t realize. We’re talking about variable delay time! We thought, “What if we had the same four playback head concept but could stretch the delay time out beyond the 300mS of the original Binson?” Then the rhythmic patterns suggested by the various combinations of those four playback heads could really come to life!

Das Catalinbread Reverb-Pedal hat das gleichnamige Programm des Yamaha FX500 Multieffektgeräts aus den 90er-Jahren zum Vorbild. Maßgeblichen Anteil hatte dieser Ambient-Reverb am Sound der britischen Band Slowdive auf ihrem Album Souvlaki, das heute unter Fans des sogenannten Shoegaze-Stils als absoluter Klassiker gilt. Und das, obwohl die Signalqualität des FX500 laut diverser Aussagen im Netz mit heutigen Maßstäben nicht mithalten kann.

With its roots in that patch, the Catalinbread Soft Focus is intended to be an instant shoegaze button, while addressing the most glaring issues of the original unit: no mix control, a sub-par preamp, and a ghastly tone-sucking bypass signal. At its heart, the Soft Focus is a heavily modified plate reverb with adjustable time, which is subsequently split into three paths. One path contains a multi-voiced chorus modulator, another features a well-appointed octave-up mixed in with the reverb, and the third path leaves the reverb untouched.

Note - The Soft Focus runs from 9 to 18 volts using a standard DC center-negative power supply for pedals. Make sure you’re using a supply that provides at least 100mA. Running the Soft Focus at 9V will sound great, but if you want a bit more output, a dry signal boost and increased headroom, try any voltage you like up to 18V! The Soft Focus does not run on batteries.

When designing the temperature controlled fuzz, we tried some unusual approaches. One false start utilized a voltage controlled error correction circuit to bias a single germanium transistor. It ultimately didn’t work for the fuzz, which is comically sensitive to transistor gain attributes. 

We did find a place for it though. 

It turns out it was PERFECT for achieving a germanium clean boost that, (like our fuzz) is impervious to component drift, leakage, and temperature....moreso in fact. We also fixed a couple other issues preventing the germanium transistor from being used as a convinc- ing linear boost...we increased the input headroom (even a normal guitar signal will drive a germanium transistor into unwanted input distortion without some tweaks) and increased the input impedance (a BJT transistor would normally thin out bass frequencies and interact negatively with whatever flows into it). 

The result is a germanium clean boost that can utilize a germanium transistor WITHOUT the weird artifacts that were previously accepted as part of the deal...temperature sensitivity, drift, and suboptimal input impedance and headroom. 

After the boost is first powered up, it takes about ten seconds before the error correction circuit correctly biases the germanium transistor After this things get interesting....we can hear how having the boost engaged makes guitar signals sound more musical...even when set at the same volume as the bypassed tone. Notes are given a simultaneously smoother and more detailed character, like a compressor but different. Some people we’ve shown it to have noted that it appears to deemphasize the unwanted parts of a signal and enhance the good. It’s killer on bass. It helps acoustic guitar pickups sound more natural. And of course it’ll push your amp into a frenzy.

The EarthQuaker Devices Ghost Echo is a vintage-voiced reverb unit designed to emulate the haunted, atmospheric character of classic amp-top spring tanks. This analog/digital hybrid circuit utilizes a unique pre-delay range of 30ms to 150ms to create everything from subtle room ambiance to deep, cavernous echoes. By separating the initial attack from the reverberated signal, it allows for distinct slapback tones that remain articulate during fast playing. The current V3 iteration features upgraded op-amps for a lower noise floor and a recalibrated dwell control capable of reaching self-oscillation. A specialized collaboration with the creative studio Brain Dead resulted in a limited edition version featuring custom psychedelic artwork.

Ein Jahr später, 1986, erschien die “Power Series”, bzw. die 10er Reihe, zu der der TS10 zählt, mit mehr Veränderungen in der Schaltung. Hier wurden sehr kostengünstige Komponenten verbaut, die Stecker sind nicht am Gehäuse, sondern auf der Platine verschraubt und das Chassis ist dünner. Gegen Ende der Produktion wurden einige TS10 in Taiwan gebaut und mit dem MC4558 Chip versehen. Die frühen Made in Japan TS10 sind mittlerweile trotz der erwähnten Abstriche sehr gefragt, nicht zuletzt, weil auch John Mayer mittlerweile dieses Pedal benutzt.

As with other Tube Screamers, the TS10 features the same three controls: Drive, Tone and Level. This model in particular is extremely responsive to the dynamics of your playing, making it a great pedal to crank up and then control via your guitar’s volume knob, for all the control over your overdrive you could want. Starting with the Tone and Drive around 9:00, it’s fun to try out different settings, both on the pedal itself, and playing with your guitar’s controls. The TS10 is also a joy to use with other pedals, especially a good boost, which can propel the overdriven sound to drive your amp beautifully, just beyond break-up, but still clean and clea

The Pentatone Equalizer is a standalone version of the 5-band equalizer section in the Ibanez Pentatone Preamp. Adding a continuously variable Q control on each band, which allows for a wider variety of sound creation, enables even more detailed sound creation.
