With the edge of a tight silicon fuzz, and some custom filtering to warm it all up, the Wren and Cuff Your Face 70's is all that's loved about the classic round fuzz pedals from the 70's, with some added tweaks to smooth things over. Wren and Cuff took two hand-matched BC108 silicon transistors selected for specific gains, super-quiet metal film resistors, and add smoothing capacitors to tame spiky highs and eliminate squealing at higher volumes, and that's only the start. Many musicians love the round original pedals for their sound, but most of them don't like the traditional low output. Wren and Cuff fixed that and the Your Face 70's Silicon Fuzz offers the unique vintage sound and in addition, all the volume you could ever want or need. Another problem with the vintage units is the way that the Fuzz knob is only useful at the last end of the knob, so Wren and Cuff added a reverse-log potentiometer that widens that range and let's you dial things in just right. They also used Mullard 'tropical fish' out-cap with increased value to allow more lows to come through. The adjustable Low-Cut control can be used to reduce some of the low-end squash, this is a simple but fantastic mod that gives an incredible amount of versatility.

Im Jahr 2014 haben die Muff-Meister von Wren and Cuff die definitive Version der nicht-transistorisierten Fuzzbox entwickelt: das Eye See '78. Nach vielen, vielen Anfragen haben sie sich nun endlich entschlossen, eine Big-Box-Version dieses begehrten Pedals anzubieten.

Der Eye See '78 nutzt dieses drastisch andere Design, um den monströsen und schwammigen Vintage-Sound zu erzeugen, wie er von Billy Corgan von den Smashing Pumpkins auf Siamese Dream populär gemacht wurde. Während die meisten Vintage Muffs etwas süßer klingen, ist der Eye See '78 knackiger und frecher.
Wie der Standard Eye See '78 ist auch die Big-Box-Version eine authentische Nachbildung der V4-Schaltung mit dem zusätzlichen Bonus des V5-Ton-Bypass-Schalters. Im Wesentlichen entfernt der Tone-Bypass-Schalter den passiven Tone-Stack aus dem Schaltkreis, was zu einem Mid-Bump, einem Volume-Boost und einem deutlich raueren und offeneren Sound führt. In 2014, the Muff masters at Wren and Cuff crafted the definitive version of the non-transistorized fuzzbox: the Eye See ‘78. After many, many requests, they have finally decided to offer a big box version of this coveted pedal.
In 1978, the vintage Muff circuit design changed drastically. The transistors inside were scrapped in favor of operational amplifiers, otherwise known as op-amps (which are integrated circuits, or ICs, hence the name). This particular variant was only manufactured for around two years, and as such, only a few thousand ever made it out of NYC alive.
The Eye See ‘78 utilizes this drastically different design to produce the monstrous and wooly vintage sound, such as the one popularized by Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins on Siamese Dream. While most vintage Muffs are a little sweeter sounding, the Eye See ‘78 is crunchier and more ballsy.
Like the standard Eye See ‘78, the big box version is an authentic replication of the V4 circuit with the added bonus of the V5 tone bypass switch. Essentially, the tone bypass switch removes the passive tone stack from the circuit, resulting in a mid-bump, volume boost, and a significantly more raw and open sound. Of course, this switch renders the tone control useless, but we’re guessing that in this mode, you won’t miss it - this switch is just too cool.
This version features 100% through hole components on a vintage style circuit board and specially selected ICs for authentic vintage tone. Oh yeah: take a peek inside for a secret adjustment to fine tune your tone beyond the stock V4 circuit...
The attention to detail doesn’t stop with the circuit and components. As always, Wren and Cuff reached out to the two LA-based small businesses - they’ve used for years to create the heavy-duty folded steel enclosures used in many of their pedals. The top of the pedal is lacquer clear-coated for corrosion resistance, features old school hand silk screened graphics and polished bakelite style knobs. This durable tone workhorse is ready for any stage, studio, or rehearsal room.
If you’re looking for a largely-untamed IC-based fuzz and distortion machine, with the ability to adapt to most genres of music under the sun, look no further than the Eye See ‘78.

Aside from the myriad of variants, the talk usually evolves into transistors and who used which variant. There was a curious time in Muff history, when the circuit designed changed drastically. That time was 1978, when the transistors inside were scrapped in favor of operational amplifiers, otherwise known as op-amps, which are integrated circuits, or ICs. This particular variant was only manufactured for around two years, and as such, only a few thousand ever made it out of New York City alive. Fast forward to 2014, and the Muff masters at Wren and Cuff have crafted the definitive version of the non-transistorized fuzz box. They call it the Eye See '78 (or previously Eye See Pi). Apart from the lack of transistors, the Wren and Cuff Eye See '78 features a drastically different clipping section for a monstrously woolly sound, such as the one popularized by Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins on Siamese Dream. As expected, the sound of the Eye See '78 is different from a standard Muff circuit. While most vintage muffs are a little 'sweeter' sounding, the Eye See '78 is certainly crunchier and more 'ballsy' than a standard Muff. In 1978, a switch was added to the back of the original, and the Eye See '78 includes this switch as well. The control is labeled as Tone Bypass on both old and new pedals. Essentially, it removes the passive tone stack from the circuit for a volume boost and a significantly more raw and open sound. Of course, this switch renders the tone control useless, but in this mode, you won't miss it - this switch is just too cool.
