Portal ist ein aktiver Signalmischer mit zwei Betriebsarten: parallel und seriell. Im Parallelmodus verfügt der Signalmischer über zwei Send/Return-Schleifen und einen Hauptausgang, der drei unabhängige Eingänge zu einem zusammenfassen oder bei Bedarf als aktiver ABY verwendet werden kann. Im Serienmodus sind A und B serielle Kanäle. Wenn der A/B-Schalter geschlossen ist, wird Kanal A oder B überbrückt. Wenn alle drei Schalter geschlossen sind, handelt es sich um einen echten Bypass.

Portal is an active signal mixer with two working modes: parallel and series. In parallel mode, the signal mixer has two send/return loops and one main output, which can combine three independent inputs into one, or can be used as an active ABY as needed. In series mode, A and B are series channels. When the A/B switch is closed, channel A or B is bypassed. When all three switches are closed, it is true bypass.

The Broadcast is a transformer coupled, discrete Class-A germanium pre-amplifier based on the classic broadcast consoles of the 1960s. In the low-gain setting, the Broadcast can cover everything from sparkling clean boost through to transparent overdrive, all with a healthy dose of volume available to push your amp. The Broadcast features a specially selected Triad steel-core transformer and a Germanium transistor. Advancing the gain on the Broadcast starts to saturate the transformer and the pedal’s discrete circuitry, giving rise to a gentle and dynamic compression coupled with subtle thickening of the mid-range. With the gain switch in the high setting and the trim control wound up, the Broadcast starts to deliver heavier distorted sounds with a warm and fuzzy edge to them. The Broadcast covers a wide range of driven and distorted tones whilst remaining dynamic, responding well to pick attack and the subtle nuances of every player.

Der Small Stone von Electro Harmonix ist ein Phaser-Pedal, das 1974 von David Cockerell entwickelt wurde. Im Gegensatz zu seinem Hauptrivalen, dem MXR Phase 90, der einen JFET-Transistor verwendet, um die Frequenz seiner vier Stufen zu variieren, ist seine Schaltung um einen Transkonduktanz-OP-Verstärker herum aufgebaut. Der Small Stone wurde unter anderem von David Gilmour und David Bowies Gitarristen Carlos Alomar verwendet und war von Anfang an ein großer Erfolg, so dass er noch immer im Katalog der in Long Island ansässigen Marke zu finden ist.

The Small Stone from Electro Harmonix is a phaser pedal that was developed by David Cockerell in 1974. Unlike its main rival, the MXR Phase 90, which uses a JFET transistor to vary the frequency of its four stages, its circuit is built around a transconductance op-amp. Used by David Gilmour and David Bowie's guitarist Carlos Alomar, among others, the Small Stone was a huge success from the start, so much so that it can still be found in the Long Island-based brand's catalog.

Das Walrus Audio 385 Overdrive-Pedal betritt völlig neues Gelände, denn als Vorbild unseres Testmodells hat der Hersteller nicht etwa einen Röhrenamp wie den Marshall Plexi, den JCM800 oder einen Fender Tweed auserkoren. Auch Pedal-Legenden wie Tube Screamer oder Klon Zentaur waren nicht im Fokus. Das Vorbild des Walrus 385 ist der Bell & Howell 385. Aha – Bildungslücke in Overdrive-Pedalkunde? Nein, denn der Bell & Howell 385 lässt sich nicht so leicht aufs Board montieren, denn bei diesem Gerät handelt es sich um einen Filmprojektor aus den 1950er Jahren, dessen Ton aus einer Röhrenendstufe schallte. Ungewöhnlich? Nicht wirklich, denn wohl jedes Gerät, das mit Röhren ausgestattet ist und über eine Eingangsbuchse verfügt, wurde im Laufe der Zeit von Gitarristen auf klangliche Tauglichkeit und vor allem Zerrfreundlichkeit überprüft. Walrus Audio hat nun den Klang dieses Filmprojektors in einem kleinen Pedal konserviert.

THIS was the sound and feel Walrus needed to shoot for in an amp-like pedal. The 385 was developed to have the same simple but effective tone control as it’s grandfather. The amp has this as well but bass and treble are stacked behind the single tone knob. With our design breaking them up, we allow for a much wider array of tones to be achieved. The user is able to boost and cut bass and treble, allowing them to be creative with mid-frequency scoops and bumps.

Dark Star is a lo-fi reverb aimed at slow attack and pad generation. Three modes introduce pitch shifting, delay, and bit crushing to the core voice of long, dark reverb. A hold switch allows infinite trails while the pedal is on. This is a reverb to go first in your signal chain, and almost an instrument of its own.

A uniquely designed steel enclosure made with quality components throughout. My goal was to spare no expense. I realize that sometimes in the world of guitar gear, there isn’t always one answer in choosing the best components and designs, so I just picked my favorites. This includes Switchcraft 11 open frame jacks, and a super quiet soft touch switching system via an internal relay.

I have been working on this project for the better part of three years, as a collaboration and with engineering by Jon Ashley of Bondi Effects. I feel that the pedal is unique in design and sonically unlike anything I have ever heard, especially in the lower gain and boost settings. There is a subtlety that feels more like a vintage pedal than a modification of a classic. There are two circuits present in the pedal, one distortion and one preamp boost, running at 18v via an internal voltage regulator. I made this pedal with the idea to create a distinction for my own sound, and what I found is that it is an extremely useful tool for capturing a lot of different types of sounds. I am most proud of the lower gain side, as I feel it is the most unique section of the pedal, but I must also include that the gain section is extremely sweet sounding throughout, especially for heavy and complex chords. There is a midrange punch that I love and a warmth and thickness that reminds me a bit of a ribbon mic. When the development of this pedal turned into something new and unique, it became the catalyst to starting 1981 Inventions, so I decided to make this the first official release.
