While the early version of the Big Muff all used the same circuit schematic several different combinations of parts values were used giving distinct flavors to the different versions of the early BMP’s. The Violet Ram’s Head version of the Big Muff were produced in the early to mid-70’s and were named for the violet ink used to print the graphics on the box and the “Ram’s Head” logo. Of the classic Big Muff version I have tried the Violet Ram’s Head is probably the most unique sounding of the variations. It is a very high gain pedal like the early Triangles and 73 Ram’s Heads but its fuzz has a smoother texture that reminds me of some of the Russian made models. What makes this version really unique to me is the higher voicing of this pedal. The most common complaints I hear from people who are not big Muff fans (besides the scooped mids) is that they are too bassy and booming. The Violet Ram’s Head may be the perfect fit for those people with it smooth saturated fuzz and brighter voicing.
