Die Entwicklung des Chorus-Effekts scheint in der Popmusik der 80er Jahre stecken geblieben zu sein – mit überbearbeiteten Gitarren, kitschigen Synthesizern und hochgestellten Kragen. Aber dieser Chorus ist anders. Bei der Entwicklung der Boost Chorus Pedale haben wir uns an den 70er Jahren orientiert, als Chorus-Effekte noch satt, weich und kraftvoll klangen. Wir haben herausgefunden, was diese Vintage-Effektpedale so gut klingen ließ, und dieses Wissen in ein neuartiges Chorus-Pedal mit deutlich verbesserter Performance und einer Vielzahl nie zuvor gehörter Sounds einfließen lassen. Slapback, Echo, Flanging und Doubling – all diese Effekte sind mit den schlicht benannten Boost Chorus Pedalen möglich.

Da traditionelle Chorus-Pedale typischerweise mit ihren Verstärkern interagieren, würden die meisten Bassisten lieber einen aggressiven Dachs auf ihrem Pedalboard haben. Der Boost Chorus Bass vermeidet dank seines speziell entwickelten Designs schwammige Klänge und unerwünschte Dachs-Effekte. Es verfügt über dieselben Bedienelemente wie der Standard-Boost-Chorus, inklusive des Multi-Voice-Schalters, unterscheidet sich jedoch durch den Detune-Regler anstelle des Pre-Delays. Mit dem Detune-Regler lässt sich die Tonhöhe der Chorstimmen anpassen, wodurch der Klang voller und satter wird und ein perfekter Bass-Chorus entsteht. Die Regler für Geschwindigkeit und Tiefe ermöglichen die Modulation, sodass die Grundtöne zumindest erhalten bleiben. Endlich ein Chorus, der perfekt mit Ihrem Bass harmoniert.

The evolution of the chorus effect seems to have gotten stuck in ’80s pop, along with over-processed guitars, cheesy synths and popped collars. This ain’t that kind of chorus. When we designed the Boost Chorus pedals we went back to the ’70s, when choruses were rich, smooth and manly. We figured out what made these vintage stompboxes sound so good and poured that knowledge into a new kind of chorus pedal with greatly improved performance and a whole slew of never-before-heard sounds. Slapback, echo, flanging and doubling effects are all possible from the modestly named Boost Chorus pedals.

Because of the way traditional chorus pedals typically interact with their amps, most bass players would rather put an angry badger on their pedalboard. The Boost Chorus Bass avoids seasick tones, and badgers, through a specially-tailored design. It features the same control set as the standard Boost Chorus, including the Multi Voice switch, but differs in having a Detune control in place of the Pre-Delay. The Detune control adjusts the pitch of the choral voices, adding sonic girth to create thick, lush, bass-perfect chorus. Speed and Depth controls add modulation, so at minimum your fundamental notes are preserved. Finally, a chorus that works in harmony with your bass.

The TC Electronic PolyTune 2 pedal tuner is an absolute must-have for every guitarist. With the help of the polyphonic tuning engine, all strings of the electric guitar can be tuned simultaneously and precisely. Guitars with a tremolo system in particular are easier to control using the polyphonic function: The tension ratio of all strings to each other becomes visible and the influence on the other strings when one string is tuned. I already own most of these pedals, so I'll only talk about the ones I don't yet have and the hypotheses regarding the problems I've noticed in my tests. Lately, I've been testing the use of two channels on the bass. One for the DI signal, focusing on the low frequencies, but depending on the bass or the intended use, taking advantage of the attack and clarity of the DI tone. Another channel for the processed signal, amplifier simulation, drive, modulation, ambience, etc. But, in this case, I added some pedals that I feel are missing and I think they would solve some things I'm lacking. I'm still not sure if some would work with this two-channel technique, especially the OC-2 and the bass micro synth. By the way, the tests I've been doing were with a fully customized jazz bass, with a cedar body and light-colored fretboard. This bass has a closed tone, especially when I use only one of the two pickups, which led me to some tones more geared towards classic rock. I still intend to do tests with my other bass, which I call the "Brazilian Spector," which bears some resemblance to a Spector (hence the name), and has a slightly more modern design.
Currently, I've been using the Soundcraft Ui24r amplifier simulations for the DI channel, without the cabinet simulation, because all its simulations are terrible, in addition to the equalization and compression, mainly to make the bass more uniform and full-bodied.
The reason I'm testing this technique is the videos of the Swedish producer Kristian Kohle and the fact that I'm not entirely satisfied with the results I've been getting using only the B3n.
In those videos, he uses an optical compressor for the bass sidechain, so I thought of the UtopiaFX LASAtronix, which is based on the LA-2A. Returning to the DI sidechain signal chain, the OC-2 (later I switched to the vintage bass octave) still leaves me with some doubts, as my goal with this pedal is to obtain that classic octave tone (direct + octave down), to have a clean octave. Considering that I am using a 350Hz HPF on the processed channel, which makes the sound spectrum smaller, and since I am not using any LPF on the DI channel, the best way to use the OC-2 would be only with the OCT1 or with the OCT1 + direct signal? The MS-60b would be for some processed clean tones that can work well with a distorted signal. And finally, the Di 1975 is a Brazilian DI with Rupert Neve quality level, fight me. Well, that's all about the DI/bass sidechain.

Moving on to the processed sidechain, I'd like to add a high-end compressor, like the Origin Effects Cali76 bass compressor, but since I'm broke, let's go with DemonFX. The bass microsynth raises similar questions for me as I did for the OC-2. Considering that this pedal will be the fuzz+octaver, which is how this pedal is used in British gospel pop rock, aka "worship," I have no idea where this pedal should go in the signal chain—whether in the Hi sidechain, the Lo sidechain, or both, idk. Moving on to the portal, I noticed in my tests that, although I already see a clean signal in parallel with the drives, I can't get the tone of a blended drive, since the clean sidechain is equalized focusing on the bass, so the high frequencies can't "jump" to the point of being at the same volume as the high frequencies of the distorted signal. So, to avoid having to mix every time I use the drive, the Portal pedal solves that (something important to mention is that in my tests, I've adjusted the drive volume so that when I turn it on, the volume doesn't change, which is the standard way to adjust a drive volume. I could even try lowering the drive volume, but that's more about the sound spectrum and the type of signal than volume). Moving on to the NY Bass Preamp, it's a Brazilian version of the Aguilar Tone Hammer, at least I think so. I chose this pedal just to get closer to that "worship" tone, closer, because they only use one channel for the bass, so I'll get a different result. Finally, the Colour Box solves the need to sculpt the tone coming from the B3n. I won't mention the reasons for this here and how I find this multi-effect limited and a wasted potential, because this text is already huge. I've already done some tests adding another equalization stage and obtained very satisfactory results, seeing why several bass players have used a high-end preamp/EQ, like the Colour Box, Noble DI, etc. Just don't ask me how I did those tests. Die intelligente Elektronik wandelt das Instrumentensignal in ein mit verschiedenen Mikrofonvorverstärkern kompatibles Signal um. So lässt sich die 1975 mit unterschiedlichen Vorverstärkern kombinieren und ermöglicht vielfältige Klangvariationen.
Der Instrumenteneingang der 1975 passt sich an verschiedene Signalpegel an, egal ob von einem passiven Vintage-Bass oder einem modernen aktiven Bass. The 1975 is a direct box designed for studio and stage use, offering a unique and special sound.
Its active circuit performs balancing through an output transformer, developed by us. It uses a nickel core and Mu-Metal shielding, responsible for adding a characteristic 70s coloration – hence the name.
The electronic design features intelligent circuitry that converts the instrument signal into a signal compatible with various microphone preamps. This allows its use in combination with different preamps, resulting in variations in sound.
The 1975 has an instrument input capable of adapting to different signal levels, whether from a vintage passive bass or a modern active bass. The circuit performs impedance conversion while maintaining the integrity of the original sound, thanks to the internal buffer with high-quality matched transistors.
Our active circuit also enables a simultaneous output, called "line out," which allows connection to amplifiers while using the balanced XLR output. The signal at both outputs remains intact, without loss or unwanted color changes.
We opted to develop a dedicated filter to eliminate unwanted signals, such as interference and ground loop problems, eliminating the need for the "ground lift" switch. This filter acts exclusively on the circuit's grounding, without interfering with the audio signal.
This is a project we've always wanted to undertake. It's extremely versatile and aligned with the sound concept that we at Analog Heroes are proud to share with you.

Das Ergebnis ist eine transparente Kompression, die gleichzeitig druckvoll und präzise klingt.
Die zweite Besonderheit stammt direkt aus der Welt der Toningenieure: Ein variabler Hochpassfilter im Sidechain bestimmt, wie stark die tiefen Frequenzen komprimiert werden. Mit aktiviertem HPF arbeitet die Kompression frequenzabhängig – die tiefen Saiten bleiben kraftvoll, lebendig und voll, während die höheren Saiten kontrolliert und fokussiert bleiben. So werden harte Slap- und Pop-Attacken gezähmt, ohne aus dem Mix herauszuspringen. Dieser Basskompressor fühlt sich an, als hätte man einen eigenen Studio-Techniker direkt auf dem Pedalboard.

With the HPF engaged, compression becomes frequency-dependent: the low strings remain full, weighty, and dynamic, while the higher strings stay tightly controlled. This prevents aggressive slap or pop notes from jumping out of the mix. In essence, this bass compressor feels like having a dedicated studio engineer built into your pedalboard.

Master kontrolliert das Gesamt-Volume des Pedals, Pre-Vol arbeitet als Gain-Regler zwischen den beiden internen Gain Stages und bietet bei Bedarf eine Verzerrung, die von leichten Break-Up-Sounds bis zu Fuzz reicht. The JHS Colour Box V2 has all the same functionality of the popular V1 version with many new and improved additions like expanded EQ controls, a Hi/Lo switch for massive clean headroom, and the ability to pass phantom power to your condenser mics. The Gain section in red has three controls: Master, Pre-Vol, and Step. The Master volume controls the overall volume of the unit. The Pre-Vol controls the amount of gain between the two internal gain stages. This acts as a "drive" or "gain" control, adding more grit, distortion, and even fuzz as you increase the gain. The Step control increases the gain of each preamp stage in five stages. Rotating the Step knob from left-to-right will increase the gain by the following: 1st is +18 dB, 2nd is +23 dB, 3rd is +28 dB, 4th is +33 dB, 5th is +39 dB. The JHS Colour Box V2 has a new Hi/Lo switch to control the amount of clean headroom you have available. In the Lo mode, you will easily be able to get ultra clean sounds without breakup. Lo Mode is excellent for tone shaping when distortion is not needed. In the Hi mode, the Colour Box V2 will distort much more readily, giving you a broad spectrum of overdrive, distortion, and fuzz sounds. In addition to the Hi / Lo gain switch, there is a -20 dB pad switch on the right side of the Colour Box V2. This function only works when in XLR input mode and can help tame the volume for high output microphones. The EQ section in blue has three new Shift controls correlating to its standard Treble, Middle and Bass controls. The Shift knobs adjust the range of frequencies that the Treble, Middle, and Bass knobs control. The center frequencies for the Shift knobs are Treble 10kHz, Middle 1kHz, and Bass 120Hz, while the Treble, Middle, and Bass knobs boost or cut with +/- 17 dB of control. If you want to boost high-mid frequencies, turn the Mid Shift knob to 3 o'clock or above and increase the Middle knob above 12 o'clock. If you want to cut upper treble frequencies, turn the Treble Shift knob to 3 o'clock or above and set the Treble knob below 12 o'clock. The Shift knobs give you precision control over the EQ for anything you put through the Colour Box V2. The Hi-Pass section is enabled by the toggle switch below the Hi-Pass knob. Just flip it up to engage the Hi-Pass knob, which spans from 60Hz to 800Hz with a 6dB per octave slope. The Colour Box V2 has a combination XLR and 1/4" input jack to use either an instrument or microphone. Select your input with the input selector switch on the right side of the pedal labeled INST/XLR.

Tech 21’s intuitive engineering eliminates the intimidation of trying to decipher an encyclopedia-sized manual just so you can change a darn program. Like its MIDI Mouse cousin, the MIDI Moose is also battery operable and provides a minimum of 200 hours usage. Its sophisticated battery-saving feature turns off the numerical display after 5 seconds. What if you forget where you were? Just hit the footswitch of the individual patch LED that has remained lit, and it will wake up the display without making any program changes.

Housed in a sleek aluminum chassis,there are Up and Down footswitches to select groupings of five preset programs. Individual silent-switching, custom actuators instantly engage each program change directly within the selected grouping.

Operable with standard 9V alkaline battery (not included), optional power supply (Tech 21 Model #DC4-A) or phantom power via the MIDI cable.

Midi Moose

In addition to the specific tones Frank wanted, a major priority was to make the Street Driver 48 simple to operate. He didn’t want a zillion knobs, switches, or gratuitous bells & whistles. He wanted players to be able to get a great sound right out of the box, whether it’s for metal or R&B or prog rock, whether novice or expert, whether young or advanced in years.

SansAmp Bass Driver DI

A super-compact adaptation of his Tech 21 Ultra Bass 1000 Signature head, the DP-3X also recreates the sound dUg originally developed way back in the ‘80s, merging high-end distortion with low-end bass. Prior to his signature head, this involved running a guitar amp and a bass amp together, along with rack full of effects. Wanting to further streamline his gear for occasions when his full Tech 21 rig simply isn’t practical, dUg collaborated on the all-analog DP-3X pedal. Personally beta-testing the DP-3X on a European tour, dUg encountered a different backline in each and every venue. But no matter which amp was on stage, dUg was able to nail his immense tone each and every night.

In addition to achieving dUg’s unique tone, the DP-3X has the flexibility to provide traditional bass amp sounds as well. Mix mode engages Drive to bring in distortion and Chunk for upper harmonics. A Gain button provides additional distortion and compression. In clean/full-range mode, Drive and Chunk disengage, while Comp and Gain remain active. Other controls include 3-band active EQ with switchable Mid and a master Volume. Features include chromatic tuner, headphone capability, and an XLR Output to go direct to the PA desk or studio board without compromising detail, warmth or responsiveness.
