Der Ursprung des Black Spiral Fuzz kann bis nach Chicago zum immer wieder erstaunlichen Chicago Music Exchange zurückverfolgt werden. Ich schaute mir deren hervorragende Pedalsammlung an und sah ein neuwertiges Maestro FZ1-S. Ich nahm es mit in die Vorführräume und verliebte mich. Es war jedoch nicht alles Gold, was glänzt, denn jeder, der schon einmal einen originalen FZ1-S ausprobiert hat, weiß, dass sie nicht ohne Macken sind. Aber der Grundton des Fuzz war grob, rau und sehr 70er-Jahre-Biker-Metal, genau wie ich meinen Fuzz mag.
Eine sehr einfache Version wurde dann zum DOD Carcosa Fuzz, aber ich habe nicht aufgehört, mit der Schaltung zu experimentieren. Im Juli 2018 habe ich eine modifizierte Version der Schaltung mit dem Nanolog N2 ausprobiert und ich war begeistert, wie sie sich entwickelt hat. Es hatte eine Germanium-ähnliche Klangqualität ohne den Lautstärkeverlust, der normalerweise mit Germanium-Dioden verbunden ist. Ich muss auch zugeben, dass es etwas verlockend Perverses hat, eine alte Schaltung mit einem ultramodernen Quanten-Tunnelgerät zu mischen. Diese Version der Schaltung wurde das Herzstück des Black Spiral Fuzz. Die neuesten Black Spiral's (April 2019) verwenden die neuen Wafer N2's mit Formfaktor, gleicher Sound, anderes Gehäuse.
Ich habe auch verschiedene Clipping-Optionen ausprobiert und mich für zusätzliche Germanium- und Siliziumdioden entschieden, die dem Nanolog N2 hinzugefügt wurden - natürlich vom Benutzer wählbar. Diese Clipping-Dioden, die in Reihe mit dem N2 geschaltet sind, fügen sehr subtile strukturelle Veränderungen hinzu, die mir gefallen. Ich plane, bei zukünftigen Limited Edition-Versionen der Black Spiral weitere Clipping-Optionen anzubieten.
Der Black Spiral ist ein unapologetisch heller Fuzz und soll mit einem bereits knackigen Amp/Kanal kombiniert werden, aber er funktioniert auch sehr gut mit einem cleanen Amp/Kanal.

The origin of the Black Spiral Fuzz can be traced back to Chicago at the always amazing Chicago Music Exchange. I was perusing their excellent collection of pedals and I saw a mint condition Maestro FZ1-S. I took it back to their demo rooms and fell in love. It wasn’t all puppies and rainbows however, anyone who has tried an original FZ1-S knows that they are not without their quirks. But the base fuzz tone was rude, raunchy, and very ’70’s Biker Metal, just how I like my fuzz.

A very simple version went on to become the DOD Carcosa Fuzz, but I haven’t stopped experimenting with the circuit. In July 2018 I tried a modified version of the circuit with the Nanolog N2 and I loved how it turned out. It had a Germanium-esque sonic quality without the volume loss normally associated with Germanium diodes. I also must admit there is something tantalizingly perverse about mixing a vintage circuit with an ultra-modern quantum tunneling device. This version of the circuit became the heart of the Black Spiral Fuzz. The latest Black Spiral's (April 2019) use the new form-factor wafer N2's, same sound different package.

I also tried several different clipping options, and settled on additional Germanium and Silicon diodes added to the Nanolog N2 - User selectable of course. These clipping diodes in series with the N2 add very subtle textural changes that I like. I’m planning on offering other clipping options on future Limited Edition versions of the Black Spiral.

The Black Spiral is an unapologetically bright fuzz, and is meant to pair with an already crunchy amp/channel but it also works quite well into a clean amp/channel too.

Size Matters, and the Yellow Spiral Drive allows you to control your low-end content with it’s unique “Tonehenge” Girth control.  The Girth control is a capacitor network selector that allows you to go from controlled lows to fit in a mix, cut -through for leads, or completely unfettered low-end pant-rippling thunder.

The Yellow Spiral Drive also utilizes the Nanolog N2 Molecular Junction mixed with silicon or LED diodes to tailor the gain to your particular taste.  Works great with either guitar or bass, rhythm or lead, clean or dirty.

Yellow Spiral Drive

A city crouches upon Lake Demhe’s shore, maybe it is Carcosa? Maybe it is Alar?  Maybe it doesn’t matter? Once you have peered into Demhe’s cloudy depths, what lies upon the shore ceases to be a concern.  

The Demhe Fuzz features chunky lows and scintillating highs that can be tamed by the Detail Control.  Both Gain and Bias work together to create tones that can range from seductive purring overdrive to savage roaring fuzz.  The Output control delivers enough boost to punish any amp channel.  The stock Blower Toggle selects between BAT46 silicon diodes, or the pure unaltered sound of the Demhe’s silicon transistors.
