Quartermaster QMX-10

The Demeter Amplification Tremulator in the small enclosure with red knobs is a rare, early version of the iconic optical tremolo pedal designed to emulate the classic Fender amp tremolo sound. Housed in a compact “bottom screw” box with distinctive red knobs and “The Tremulator” script on the face, it features simple controls for Depth and Speed, a footswitch, and an LED indicator. The pedal includes an internal trim pot for adjusting the bias of the optical circuit (accessible by removing the bottom plate), offers a slight clean boost, and runs on 9V power via a 1/8" mini plug rather than a standard barrel connector. Known for its warm, pulsing tremolo and legendary reliability, this version is prized by collectors and musicians for its vintage build and classic tone. The main differences between the small enclosure, red knob Demeter Tremulator and the standard TRM-1 Tremulator are cosmetic and related to production era: the early version is smaller, features red knobs, and is more collectible, while the TRM-1 is larger, uses black knobs, and is more widely available. Both share the same optical tremolo circuit and controls, so their sound and performance are virtually identical. Any minor tonal variation would be due to component age rather than design.

The EHX Pitch Fork transposes an instrument’s pitch over a +/- three octave range and features three modes which allow the pitch to be transposed up, down or both, simultaneously. Es ist unklar, wie genau das Flanging entstanden ist. Möglicherweise war es das Ergebnis des Versuchs, die Grenzen der Mehrspuraufnahme auszuloten – vermutlich durch das parallele Abspielen zweier Tonbandmaschinen, die nicht ganz synchron liefen … Vielleicht hat auch einfach jemand im Studio versehentlich die Flanschseite einer Aufwickelspule berührt? Vielleicht war es Les Paul, vielleicht John Lennon und George Martin? Man weiß es nicht genau.

Klar ist jedoch: Die mechanische Studiomethode zur Erzeugung dieses Effekts wurde innerhalb eines Jahrzehnts so verbreitet, dass Unternehmen begannen, den Effekt elektronisch zu simulieren. Diese elektronischen Ansätze waren anfangs innovativ und aufregend, doch in den 80ern wirkten sie abgenutzt und langweilig.

Bei Catalinbread führen wir das darauf zurück, dass diese Geräte den Flanging-Effekt mithilfe eines LFOs erzeugten, der sich in einem vorhersehbaren Tempo auf- und abbewegte – und damit dem Effekt seine Lebendigkeit und Frische nahm. Als wir beschlossen, einen eigenen Flanger zu entwickeln, war uns klar, dass wir ihn so angehen würden, wie es ursprünglich gemacht wurde …


It’s uncertain what exactly the origin of flanging was. It could have been the result of trying to push the boundaries of multitrack recording, probably due to running a couple tape machines in parallel but not quite in sync… Maybe a guy messing around in the studio brushed up against a take-up reel flange accidentally?  Maybe that guy was Les Paul, maybe it was John Lennon and George Martin? It is unclear. But, what is clear is that the mechanical studio method of achieving the effect became, within a decade, commonplace enough for companies to simulate the effect electronically. The electronic approaches were pretty cool and groundbreaking, but by the 80s became tired and worn out. At Catalinbread we attribute this to the fact that these units controlled the flange effect using an LFO that went up and down at a predictable rate taking the life and freshness out of the effect. When we decided to design a flanger, we knew we would approach it the way they originally did it…

First thing I hit is a MXR super comp that sits under the pedalboard! Then wah etc... I use one of the triggers for switching my clean/distorted channel on my MT15. On the MOD1, B goes into the input, C and D are for FX loop. E is the footswitch I mentioned early. With this setup you don't need a Tuner out, but from there I hit an almost cranked up Fender Deluxe Reverb. The effects from the pedalboard won't affect it, so it's kind of a dry signal that is mixed with my main amp, the MT15.

Signal path: 
Guitar goes into MXR super comp ->  Slash wah -> MXR sub machine -> Fuzzface -> Joyo PXL PRO looper. From there, I have my first 4 loops of the PXL, that will hit the front of the amp.  Electro Harmonix Silencer with the 4 cables method (looper send->Silencer's Input/Silencer's send->looper return. Silencer's Out and Return are in the Second section of loops of the PXL) ; MOER Acoustikar ; Electro Harmonix OD GLOVE ; KMA Logan. 
Then I have the remaining 4 loops of the PXL that will go into the FX loop of the amp. 
The first pedal is the noise gate as mentioned (looper send goes into Silencer's out->Silencer's return goes into looper return) ; Then it's time for the NUX Lacerate booster, I have it in the FX loop so that I have a volume boost on the Distorted channel of my MT15 amp. 
Then I have a loop in which I hit Electro Harmonix EDDY, Tc Electronic Thunderstorm, and Joyo D-Seed. I tend to leave the delay turned on and make presets with it, and when I need the chorus or the flanger I just leave my preset where I have the delay on and switch it off. Then I switch on my chorus or flanger. 
And finally, Strymon Blue Sky.

The pxl-live is the newest member of the joyo pxl series programmable pedal controllers - pxl4, pxl8, pxl-pro. The pxl-live is a very powerful pedal controller. It not only has dual 4 channel outputs like the pxl-pro, and dual (relay)switch outputs for channel switching, it also has MIDI out. Programmable MIDI commands can be sent enabling you to control MIDI enabled devices such as: effect pedals, effects racks, keyboards or amps through the MIDI port. The pxl-live can send MIDI cc and MIDI program change commands at the same time and will allow “Hands free”control of your computer recording software.
