Es war der Oktober im Jahr 1971, als die Mannen von Pink Floyd ihr berühmtes Werk „Live at the Pompeii“ im Amphitheater der gleichnamigen italienischen Stadt aufnahmen. Stets mit dabei war eines der wohl angesagtesten Effektgeräte der damaligen Zeit – das Binson Echorec. Wohl kaum ein anderes Gerät prägte so maßgeblich den Sound von Pink Floyd der frühen Jahre wie dieses Echogerät, dessen Prinzip auf einer rotierenden Magnetscheibe basierte, die mit vier Tonköpfen das Signal aufnahm bzw. abspielte. Dabei machte nicht nur Leadgitarrist Dave Gilmour vom Echorec gebrauch, auch Bassist Roger Waters und Tastenmann Richard Wright nutzen diese Maschine ausgiebig.

The Binson Echorec was so cool we had no choice but to bring it back. And we wanted to bring it back right. We wanted to take all the goodness of that huge Binson Echorec and squeeze it down into a standard sized stompbox without losing anything. In fact, in addition to not losing any of the qualities that made it such a compelling musical device, we wanted to EXTEND its capabilities because the original Binson hinted at possibilities that it couldn’t realize. We’re talking about variable delay time! We thought, “What if we had the same four playback head concept but could stretch the delay time out beyond the 300mS of the original Binson?” Then the rhythmic patterns suggested by the various combinations of those four playback heads could really come to life!

Das Catalinbread Belle Epoch Delay-Effektpedal orientiert sich am Sound des legendären Maestro Echoplex EP-3, das in den 1970er Jahren zum Arsenal diverser Helden des Rock gehörte, darunter solche Namen wie Brian May, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, David Gilmour oder Eric Johnson. Sie setzten das Delay oft und gerne ein, neben dem warm klingenden Bandecho-Sound auch wegen seines Preamps, mit dem man einen Amp noch etwas heißer anfahren und zu etwas mehr Zerre überreden konnte.

 The Catalinbread Belle Epoch Tape Echo, has tape echo sounds so authentic you’d swear there was tape inside the pedal! Inspired by the Maestro Echoplex, EP-3 model, perhaps the most famous tape delay ever, the Belle Epoch features everything we love about the EP-3 in a small, maintenance free pedal format. We felt that a “tape echo” pedal was much more than just a standard digital delay with some “filtering” on the repeats. There are a lot of subtle and not-so-subtle traits of the Echoplex that needed to be implemented in order to be authentic. The preamp, the self-oscillation character, the ability to control the “record level” of the signal hitting “tape”, the wow and flutter, the way the repeats decay, the way the circuit interfaces with the amp and other pedals – all these things were important to get right. The original unit was used as a musical instrument unto itself and this is what we captured with the Belle Epoch.

In 1970 Led Zeppelin hit the stage of London's historic concert hall, Royal Albert Hall. We love the RAH performance and were inspired by a friend to capture it in a pedal.
At this performance Jimmy Page expressed himself masterfully with a broad pallet of tones and GIANT dynamic range. Of course this has a lot to do with Page’s playing technique and Gibson Les Paul. His backline amps, custom Hiwatt heads into Marshall cabinets filled the entire hall with a cornucopia of colors at levels ranging from a mouse whisper to rave ups louder than a jumbo jet taking off only inches over your head.

Der Dallas Rangemaster wurde ursprünglich entwickelt, um die Signalstärke auf dem Weg von der Gitarre zum Verstärker anzuheben und die Höhen im Signal zu boosten. The British Pedal Company Compact Series NOS Rangemaster is a compact, modern replica of one of the world's most iconic effects - the Dallas Rangemaster treble booster. The NOS version combines authentic vintage parts (new old stock) with a modern effects pedal design. Originally produced in 1965, it has been used by many of the worlds most respected artists including Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, Rory Gallagher, Brian May, Marc Bolan, Ritchie Blackmore and many more. The Dallas Rangemaster was initially designed to increase the signal strength of the guitar going into the amplifier, and to increase tones at the high-end of the spectrum. The need for a treble booster arose in the mid-1960s as British tube amplifiers tended to produce a slightly dark, muddy sound when overdriven, particularly when used with humbucking pickups. Although classed as a treble booster, the Rangemaster was also used as an overdrive pedal to give a more distorted but focused tone with many classic British amplifiers.

Mit dem MXR Il Torino aus dem MXR Custom Shop stellt sich heute ein Overdrive-Pedal dem bonedo-Test, das mit einem etwas höheren Anspruch antritt, als die meisten anderen Effektpedale des Traditionsherstellers. Einen Custom Shop gibt es also nicht nur für Gitarren wie zum Beispiel bei Fender oder Gibson, sondern auch für Effektpedale, wie wir hier sehen. Das dürfte auch damit zusammenhängen, dass das inzwischen ohnehin sehr große Angebot an Boutique-Geräten jeden Tag weiter wächst und Massenhersteller wie MXR sich etwas einfallen lassen müssen, um in diesem Marktsegment nicht ins Hintertreffen zu geraten.
