The Fuzz Face was released in 1966 by Dallas Electronics Ltd. and is one of the most iconic fuzz pedals ever made. This British fuzz is recognized instantly by its "Smiley Face" enclosure that was developed after Mr. Arbiter used the circular base of a microphone stand as inspiration. It is one of the first things we think of when we hear "fuzz pedal" because it lived at the feet of the great Jimi Hendrix. The Fuzz Face was released just a few months after the Sola Sound "Tonebender" 1.5 hit the market, and upon investigation, it is an almost identical circuit. The original Fuzz Face manual even said that it was a "battery-powered TONE-BENDING unit," clearly showing its inspiration. Though the circuit is much like the Tonebender MK1.5, the tone is very different. It possesses a very full and thick fuzz sound with roaring low-end frequencies. I can't help but think of how this made the three-piece Jimi Hendrix Experience sound larger than life. The most amazing feature of this fuzz is its ability to change into something magical as you roll your guitar volume down. Many of Hendrix, as well as players like Eric Johnson's clean tones, are in fact, the Fuzz Face with the fuzz control maxed, but the guitar volume turned way down. This setting results in an unreal and almost mythical light overdrive that you have to feel and hear to understand. As with most classic fuzz pedals, it loves a dirty amp or overdrive afterward in the signal path. Staying true to the original, I used high-grade carbon composition resistors, oversized capacitors, and two germanium transistors that I hand-matched to the circuit.

Each small batch of Fuzzes will use different transistors as it is challenging to find reliable sources of these devices in large quantities. The circuit uses vintage positive ground voltage, so do not daisy chain your power with other pedals. Inside the pedal is a battery snap or use any isolated power supply with a standard polarity power cable like your other pedals as I have wired it internally to work that way. The Fuzz is identical to the original except that I adjusted the taper of the pots to feel more intuitive. I also added a single power supply filter capacitor to help with noise and adjusted one resistor value for more volume. The switching is true-bypass. Each pedal in this batch is built-in identical form, but because of parts tolerances and the slight variance in the transistors, they will all be a bit different while still being the same. Be sure to always have this pedal first in your signal chain; the guitar must be plugged into its input due to the impedance it requires on its input, no exceptions.

1966 Series Fuzz

Das JHS Artificial Blonde Madison Cunningham Signature Pedal ist im Grunde eine unkomplizierte Annäherung an Madisons Signature-Sound: ein immer eingeschalteter, leicht dreidimensionaler Vibrato-Sound. Der zweite Fußschalter schaltet zwischen den beiden Speed/Depth Preset-Sektionen um. Dies ist ein echtes Pitch-Vibrato-Modulationspedal mit zwei leicht zugänglichen Modi für den Live-Einsatz. Dieses flexible und charakteristische Vibrato Pedal bietet neben dem globalen Volume Regler einen aktiven Tilt-EQ. Durch Drehen nach links werden die Tiefen angehoben und die Höhen abgesenkt, während durch Drehen nach rechts die Höhen angehoben und die Tiefen abgesenkt werden. Mit dem linken Fußschalter kann der Effekt eingeschaltet werden und mit dem rechten schaltet man das Preset A oder B. Jedes Preset hat die gleiche Speed/Depth Range und ermöglicht zwei verschiedene schaltbare Einstellungen.

The JHS Artificial Blonde Madison Cunningham Signature Pedal is basically a simple approach to Madison's signature sound: an always-on, slightly three-dimensional vibrato sound. The secondary footswitch switches between the two speed/depth preset sections. It is a true pitch vibrato modulation pedal with two easy to access modes for live use. This flexible and distinctive vibrato pedal features an active tilt EQ in addition to the global volume control. Turning it to the left boosts the lows and cuts the highs, while turning it to the right boosts the highs and cuts the lows. The left footswitch turns the effect on and the right one switches preset A or B. Each preset has the same speed/depth range and allows two different switchable settings.

The Pollinator V2 follows in the footsteps of this legendary circuit, but takes its abilities to new levels. At its heart are hand matched AC128 Germanium transistors that add a mojo and flavor that is instantly recognizable. In 1962 the worlds first manufactured guitar pedal was introduced in the Maestro Fuzz-Tone. Three years later in 1965, it made its way across the pond from the USA to the hands of a British engineer named Gary Hurst in London. The legend has it that he was asked by a London session player to modify the circuit for more bass and better sustain. After some tweaking, the Tonebender was born. The Tonebender MKI was a three transistor circuit as was the following MKII that came later in 1966. Decades after the Tonebenders heyday of the 1960s, a collector named Dennis Johannsen realized that his 60's era Tonebeder had only two transistors, not three. This discovery caused a puzzling situation because all Tonebender circuits through MKIV are a three transistor design. Through further investigation, it came to light in an interview with Gary Hurst that he did make a very small batch of two transistor Tonebenders in February and March of 1966. Dennis Johannsen named his discovery the MK1.5, and it is one of the rarest pedals ever produced, a collectors dream. The Arbiter Fuzz face that came in late 1966 is an almost direct clone as well as various other two-transistor fuzz circuits of the era. The MK1.5 is a true legend of guitar that almost went unnoticed to history. The sound of this fuzz is very aggressive, full of low end, and sustain. You may also notice a slight velcro-ish type decay as notes decay off in extreme settings. As with most classic fuzz pedals, it loves a dirty amp or overdrive afterward in the signal path.
