Kevin Shields gilt als Innovator und feste Größe in der Gitarrenwelt. Mit seinen experimentellen kreativen Fuzz-Nuancen setzte er Standards im Alternative Rock der 80er und 90er Jahre. Sein Lieblingsteil: ein original Fender Blender mit hochdynamischer Ansprache und intensiven, kernigen Fuzz-Facetten. Nach mehr als vier Jahren gemeinsamer Tüftelei ist es uns gelungen, den legendären 70er Jahre Fuzz mit dem Fender Shields Blender neu aufleben zu lassen. Modern, unkonventionell, inspirierend.

Das Herz des Fender Shields Blender ist bis ins Detail dem Schaltkreis aus Shields heißgeliebtem 1970er Fender Blender nachempfunden. Um diesen Vintage-Schaltkreis herum haben wir eine völlig neue Verschaltung und innovative Regler gebaut, mit denen der Fuzz variiert und gesteuert wird – natürlich bühnentauglich mit vier durchdachten Fußschaltern für die beiden Fuzz-Kanäle. Jeder Kanal hat dedizierte Lautstärkeregler zum Mischen des cleanen Signals und der Fuzz-Effekte. Auch die Effekte selbst können ineinander gemixt oder oktaviert werden. Smartes Detail: der Sag-Schaltkreis, der ebenfalls per Fußschalter aktiviert wird. Damit lassen sich je nach Anschlagsstärke krasse Stotter- und Ducking-Effekte erzeugen.

His tool of choice for fuzz laden chaos: an original Fender® Blender effect pedal, prized for its dynamic response and gripping fuzz splatter. Now, through over four years of co-development Fender and Shields have resurrected this mythical 1970's fuzz and injected a subversive feature set, creating the all-new Fender Shields Blender.

At its core, the Fender Shields Blender echoes the tone of Shields' own vintage 1970s Fender Blender, thanks to carefully hand tracing the circuit from his personal fuzz box. Built around this vintage circuit are entirely new ways of controlling and blending the original fuzz voice, all crafted with performance in mind utilizing four easy-access footswitches. Two footswitchable channels of fuzz, each with dedicated level controls, offer the ability to blend the fuzz voice with your clean signal or to blend the fuzz voice with a beefy suboctave fuzz, while the sag footswitch introduces sputtering and ducking effects like never before heard, all controlled by the intensity of your playing dynamics.

The Mainframe provides sample rate reduction ranging from 48kHz to 110Hz. A little background… the sample rate is the number of times per second that a sample or snapshot of an analog signal is taken. For example, CDs (remember them?) had a sample rate of 44.1kHz which means that the original analog signal is sampled 44,100 times per second.

Die Effektpedale der COOLTRON-Serie sind ganz klar Tretminen der besonderen Art. Schließlich enthalten sie eine echte 12AU7 Vorverstärkerröhre, die für Biss, Wärme und tonnenweise Fett steht, aber trotzdem kein Batteriefresser ist. Ein Netzteil ist im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes Sonderzubehör: Nett, aber nicht unentbehrlich.

Zwei Kanäle –jeder mit eigenem GAIN- und Pegelregler– mit herrlich knurrigem Röhren-Sound. Der Name ist Programm: Mit dem VOX Bulldog Distortion versengst du selbst den Fans in der hintersten Reihe noch die Haare. „Gain 1” deckt die „Vintage”-Verzerrungssparte ab, während „Gain 2”, ganz Zeitgeist, aggressiver und mit leicht betonten Mitten daherkommt. Beide Modi können von „dezent” bis „völlig krank” röhren. Und wenn’s bei hoher Übertreibung auch gehörig hämmern soll, drehst du einfach den BASS-Regler weiter auf. Bei weniger Drive sorgt er hingegen für einen zusätzlichen Wärmeschub. Mit dem VOICE-Regler von „Gain 2” versiehst du jenen Sound bei Bedarf dann noch mit jenen Schmirgelpapier-Applikationen, bei denen sich selbst drei Häuserblocks weiter noch die Tapete von den Wänden löst. Der TREBLE-Regler schließlich dient zum Abrunden bzw. extra Aufmotzen des unwiderstehlichen Sounds. Das Bulldog-Pedal ist mit einer echten Bypass-Schaltung versehen.

Röhren bedürfen bekanntlich einer Spannung, die ein batteriegetriebenes Effektpedal bisher nicht auf die Waage bringen konnte. Unzählige Erfinder haben schon versucht, eine Röhre im weniger-geht-nicht-Verfahren anzusprechen. Das klappt aber nur bedingt, weil eine Röhre nicht gerne unter Tarif spielt und dann eben mit dem Sound geizt. Ihre Leistungsaufnahme liegt weit über dem, was eine Batterie länger als ein paar Minuten aushält. Und dein Publikum zahlt ja nicht für deine Batteriewechselkünste auf offener Bühne!

Schon allein deshalb sind die COOLTRONs wirklich cool. Die COOLTRON-Schaltung beruht nämlich auf zwei unkonventionellen Signalwegen: Einer „Servoschaltung”, welche die richtige Atmosphäre zwischen der Platte und dem Gitter in der Röhre aufkommen lässt und so für stabile Bedingungen sorgt, bei der die Röhre uneingeschränkt aufblühen kann; und einer patentierten Stromversorgung, welche die Heizkörper der Röhre mit sparsamer Niedrigspannung speist. Da die Röhre quasi auf Sparflamme läuft, liegt der Anodenstrom weit unter dem Regelwert. Das hat wiederum zur Folge, dass auch die Kathode nicht mehr gar soviel Wärme für die Abgabe einer ausreichenden Strommenge benötigt. Deswegen haben die 4 AA-Batterien der COOLTRON-Pedale eine Lebensdauer von sensationellen 18 Stunden!

The effect pedals in the COOLTRON series are clearly pedal mines of a special kind. After all, they contain a genuine 12AU7 preamp tube, which stands for bite, warmth and tons of fat, but is still not a battery guzzler. A power supply unit is an optional extra in the truest sense of the word: nice, but not indispensable.

Two channels - each with its own GAIN and level control - with a wonderfully growly tube sound. The name says it all: with the VOX Bulldog Distortion, you'll scorch the hair of even the fans in the back row. “Gain 1” covers the ‘vintage’ distortion range, while “Gain 2”, in keeping with the spirit of the times, is more aggressive and has slightly emphasized mids. Both modes can be roared from “subtle” to “completely sick”. And if you want it to thump with a high level of exaggeration, simply turn the BASS control up further. With less drive, on the other hand, it provides an additional boost of warmth. With the VOICE control of “Gain 2”, you can then add those sandpaper applications to the sound where the wallpaper comes off the walls even three blocks away. Finally, the TREBLE control is used to round off or pimp up the irresistible sound. The Bulldog pedal is equipped with a true bypass circuit.

As is well known, tubes require a voltage that a battery-powered effect pedal has not yet been able to handle. Countless inventors have already attempted to address a tube using the less-is-more method. However, this only works to a limited extent, because a tube does not like to play under a tariff and is then stingy with the sound. Their power consumption is far higher than what a battery can withstand for more than a few minutes. And your audience isn't paying for your battery changing skills on stage!

For this reason alone, the COOLTRONs are really cool. The COOLTRON circuit is based on two unconventional signal paths: a “servo circuit” that creates the right atmosphere between the plate and the grid in the tube, thus ensuring stable conditions in which the tube can flourish without restriction; and a patented power supply that feeds the tube's heating elements with economical low voltage. As the tube runs on a low flame, so to speak, the anode current is far below the control value. This in turn means that the cathode no longer needs as much heat to supply a sufficient amount of current. This is why the 4 AA batteries in the COOLTRON pedals have a sensational service life of 18 hours!
