Effect pedalboard MIDI controllable and with redundancies.

This pedalboard can be accessed by two different guitar players. Since I am left handed and Thomas (usually main vocals) is right handed, i wanted to make sure that everyone has a seperate way of entering the board with the ability to connect any wireless system and a quick way to connect their own guitar quickly to a dedicated input, so a quick change is still possible, without unplugging my or his guitar. So if we have to swap spots (and i am going to be main vocals for a few songs), a midi bank can be loaded via the wirelessly connected MIDI board, that switches my guitar setup to his via the OSC ABY and loads presets that he might need for/disengages effects in the chain and in the fx loop.

The board itself is actually designed to be placed near the amp, not being operated on stage, but rather remotely controlled via MIDI, since i have broken previous effect pedals through neglect and overuse.

The effects loop of the amp is currently only being used by the 1440 that has looped samples saved and can be started, stopped and manipulated via the MIDI board. The rest of the effects are sitting in between the guitars and the input of the amp, which are all midi controllable. Since the Whammy and the HX One are being used used together often, the pedals are being put next to each other against their actual signal path, so you can engage or disengage both pedals quicker, if necessary.

The OSC Siren is sending the output of the guitar on Output B via a cheap wireless transmitter to the MIDI board, which has a tuner on it.

MIDI:

The MIDI signal path is being received from the MIDI board wirelessly via WIDI with the WIDI Jack, which is connected to and powered by the Morningstar Engineering MIDI Box . Since it has TRS outputs, you can encounter ground loop issues if you have multiple output routes (pre amp effect chain + amp effects loop in this case) thanks to that, but this can easily be fixed by using a simple, passive MIDI coupler in between the MIDI outs of the MIDI Box and the receiving pedal.

NOTE: The DOREMiDI USB MIDIHUB and the two Kenton MERGE-4s are just stand ins for signal flow options for either wireless or wired operation.

Redundancies:

If a wireless guitar transmitter/receiver is causing issues, you can just connect your guitar with a wire to the Looperwerk Patchbox Solo, which automatically switches the input to the second input jack, where you plug in the cable. So if only one of the wireless setups is causing issues, either Thomas or me can stay on their current setup without replugging anything. If both systems are causing issues, Thomas and me can just plug our guitars into their designated input jacks.

If WIDI is causing issues, you can just unplug the WIDI jack from the MIDI ports on the MOD 2 and connect MIDI cables to the MIDI board and the amp/digital amp.

If MIDI completely fails, the board can be brought on stage and just be used like a normal pedalboard. The MIDI board has a Lehle Mono Volume S as an expression pedal, which can be detached from the MIDI board and can be inserted into the signal chain via the Looperwerk Patchbox Duo Insert.

Neat:

Since i hand picked every pedal to be MIDI controllable, there is no Loop Switcher needed. I am considering adding one, as soon as if i find a pedal, i cant live without that does not have MIDI.

Surprisingly, even with all the electronics, cable runs etc. the noise floor of the board is almost non-existant, if every effect is turned off.

So far, WIDI has not been an issue on stage. I have played this board in the club, open air and in crowded spaces, yet i did not need to hard wire this setup yet.

Throughout the build, i have switched from classic zip ties to cable organizers by CableGenie. The size of their base is a bit smaller than the spacing of the Rockboard rows themselves, so i can use the whole space way better. They are reusable and if you have to reorganize cables, its not a pain anymore. I hope the silicon band that is holding the cables together will stand the test of time.

Dual Lock is a great improvement versus Velcro / Hook & Loop. IT IS NOT PERFECT, but it is better in every way.

Not So Neat:

Even though MIDI is a matured standard, it can still be a pain. Not because of its "limited" functionality (16 Channels/devices max.), but because of its wide yet limited product variety. The fact that the Morningstar Engineering MIDI Box was the ONLY "affordable" option that was relatively small and can be powered with 9V was frustrating. Not to mention the two different TRS MIDI "standards". Thankfully the MIDI Box also solves that problem. It did not solve the ground loop error though, thankfully that was a cheap fix, which is still in testing though.

I do not understand why the Whammy 5's MIDI configuration is the way it is. I dont know who thought it was a good idea not to implement an on/off toggle via Control Changes, especially since this device has to be CC capable because of the expression pedal functionality.

The worst offender here might be strymon in the MIDI category though. There was literally no information available what kind of standard they use and back when i had a strymon pedal on my board and less knowledge, i was forced to buy one of their cables to get it working through MIDI. Really frustrating.

I wish Rockboard would include a power switch on their C14/C13 passthrough ports of their MODs. I fortunately found a short C13 to C14 (angled) cable that includes one and i know that Rockboard sells those, too, but these cables not flexible and the switch itself is HUGE as well. Cable managing this is hell.

The Mini Mounting MOD TRS provides convenient access to the signal supply of the pedals on the board. It fits perfectly into the RockBoard® LED Light mounting holes and is a versatile, clean mounting solution on all RockBoard® series pedalboards. Central access to the signal supply is provided by a TRS 6.3 mm stereo jack socket. Since the Mini Mounting MOD TRS uses through-connections between the inner and outer jacks, it is also possible to pass signals in the reverse direction to external pedals, such as Wah. Also, by using TRS stereo jacks, „send/return“ applications (A- = tip and B- = ring) are easy to realize.
