In 2014, the Muff masters at Wren and Cuff crafted the definitive version of the non-transistorized fuzzbox: the Eye See ‘78. After many, many requests, they have finally decided to offer a big box version of this coveted pedal.
In 1978, the vintage Muff circuit design changed drastically. The transistors inside were scrapped in favor of operational amplifiers, otherwise known as op-amps (which are integrated circuits, or ICs, hence the name). This particular variant was only manufactured for around two years, and as such, only a few thousand ever made it out of NYC alive.
The Eye See ‘78 utilizes this drastically different design to produce the monstrous and wooly vintage sound, such as the one popularized by Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins on Siamese Dream. While most vintage Muffs are a little sweeter sounding, the Eye See ‘78 is crunchier and more ballsy.
Like the standard Eye See ‘78, the big box version is an authentic replication of the V4 circuit with the added bonus of the V5 tone bypass switch. Essentially, the tone bypass switch removes the passive tone stack from the circuit, resulting in a mid-bump, volume boost, and a significantly more raw and open sound. Of course, this switch renders the tone control useless, but we’re guessing that in this mode, you won’t miss it - this switch is just too cool.
This version features 100% through hole components on a vintage style circuit board and specially selected ICs for authentic vintage tone. Oh yeah: take a peek inside for a secret adjustment to fine tune your tone beyond the stock V4 circuit...

Wren and Cuff war schon immer für Vintage Muff Nachbildungen bekannt und als das Original Full-Size Caprid im Jahr 2012 auf den Markt kam, war es sofort ein Hit und erhielt begeisterte Kritiken von Magazinen, Profi-Musikern und der Pedal-Community im Allgemeinen. Es hatte einen tollen 5-Jahres-Lauf. Das Pedal wurde dann 2017 aufgrund der hohen Herstellungskosten des großen Metallgehäuses wieder eingestellt. Nach vielen Jahren und vielen Anfragen haben Wren and Cuff endlich nachgegeben und ihr berühmtes Caprid OG neu aufgelegt. Die Black-Violet Caprid Special Edition ist eine Reproduktion des berühmten Ram's Head Muffs aus der 'violetten Ära' Mitte der 70er Jahre. Das Pedal enthält drei handselektierte Orange-Dot Transistoren und einen Violet-Dot Transistor, Carbon Composition 1/2 Watt Widerstände und die hochwertigsten Kondensatoren und Bauteile, die Wren and Cuff finden konnten. Der Tone ist gesättigt und wunderschön gleichmäßig - dreht man den Gain auf, erzeugt das Pedal ein 'warmes Meer' aus Sustain, erdigen Bässen und einem satten Top-End mit genau der richtigen Menge des charakteristischen Muff Mid-Scoops. So allgemein die Redewendung auch ist, 'violin-like Sustain' ist genau die Art und Weise, wie dieses Pedal mit Single Notes spielt. Die Black-Violet Custom Color Version hat genau die gleiche Schaltung wie das Blue-Violet Caprid, der einzige Unterschied ist die Lackierung.

Wren and Cuff has always been known for vintage Muff recreations, and when the full size original Caprid hit the scene in 2012 it was an instant hit, getting rave reviews from magazines, pro players, and the pedal community at large. It had a great 5 year run. The pedal was then placed on hiatus in 2017 due to the manufacturing cost of having the big metal beast of an enclosure made by a small shop in Los Angeles. After many years and many requests, Wren and Cuff have finally given in and reissued their famous Caprid OG. This special edition Black-Violet Caprid is a reproduction of the famed mid-'70s 'violet-era' Ram's Head Muff. This pedal contains three hand-selected orange-dot and one violet-dot transistors, 1/2 watt carbon composition resistors, and the highest quality caps and components Wren and Cuff could find. The tone is saturated and even - turn the gain up, and you get a milky warm sea of sustain, earthy lows, and a rich top-end with just the right amount of that signature Muff mid-scoop. As generic as the term is, 'violin-like sustain' is exactly the way to describe the way this pedal grabs hold of a note. The Black-Violet Custom Color version is exactly the same as the Blue-Violet Caprid, the only difference is the color scheme.
